Incorrect, the 10 second timer does not start until you receive the buff when the animation finishes.

Hit HG -> Animation (can still die here) -> HG buff on -> 10 seconds -> HG buff off

I like the long animation of Hallowed Ground. The arm movement and the sword thrust into the air synced with the golden shield effect is a great little visual. Once you mentally transition from HG being a "save my ass" skill to a "I am fucking invincible for the next 10 seconds, stop trying to hit me and hit me" skill, you'll be more happy with it. In other words, use it before bombs+landslide/triple incinerate/double dread rotoswipe, not after. Use it to give your healer time to stabilize the raid after something bad happens. Using HG on the final 5% of a boss to bring it home is pretty satisfying as well.

It's one thing to say you fucked up and didn't use it in time but another to say you didn't really fuck up but you may be punished anyways.

That's true. It's not specified anywhere but I'm positive the animation was designed to essentially serve as a cast timer. But nowhere in the game hints that, it's just something people pick up with experience and are irritated by until they mentally associate the cooldown of HG with the "cast" and not the effect itself.

Same thing with instants not being instant, able to be used when 60% of the way through GCD, and not triggering the GCD. I haven't seen this system described clearly anywhere in the game, maybe I missed it.

Cast timer is fine, I'd grumble about it but at least that's the skill. Using it and dying then raising and seeing it on CD is just a slap in the face when you're already wiping.

This has been my experience as well. Though deeps WAR + deeps SCH together can beat our top DPS slightly. So we're like 5 DPS :D
