So we got to temperatures that were literally colder than Antarctica this week. Several people died.

We're back into the single-digit sub-zero temperatures, now, though.

How the hell are people dealing with -60 degrees o_O. How long can the infrastructure handle that? I'd imagine pipes are freezing over, people are having trouble finding sufficient heating, etc. Real crazy shit.

also, for the pipes, municipalities will usually send out alerts for people to start running the faucet nearest their water main 24/7, and then adjust the bill accordingly. flowing water won't freeze as quickly. as far as i'm aware, our city didn't have a single burst pipe, at least outside peoples' homes.

with electric heating, it's just another high load period, like an inverse heat wave. gas is also a common type of heating and that doesn't really give a shit what temperature it is outside. not sure what temp propane/etc starts to go liquid but i doubt the weather can pull it off.

i wouldn't say we could handle it indefinitely, but most people didn't really need to do much other than just not go outside.
