A lot of this made me just have a hearty giggle.
I feel bad for the man, but he honestly did it to himself. How he doesn't realize he's in over his head, I will never know.
I feel guilty for not contributing to the Kickstarter because this mess of a drama that's unfolding is worth every penny
Here is the October update, they just added :
- Database-driven NPC population
- New zones
- Combat and exploration
- Original music, atmospheres and sound effects.
My PS2 called, it wants its graphics back.
they need to scrap this already
It's all stock Unity assets as i don't think they have an art department. Regardless, i don't think it looks that bad apart from animations. I obviously love the concept behind the game but i doubt it's ever going to get anywhere.
Dat eye of Sauron(however it's spelled).
Here is the November Update Video. Wow that combat !
Yes... Looks so exciting...
I like the part where they're trying to show us this "beautiful realm you can call home" and the chat log takes up 1/3 of the screen
Game probably would have been good in the year 2000...
Well bad news for SOE means good news for Brad ! Some of the devs from the EQ team have moved on over to Visionary Realms. They now have a new CEO that will take over the business side of things from Brad (Which is probably a good thing).
Here is a new dev video that shows off the progression of the game.
Despite all the hate the game gets, and that's mostly because of Brad, it's still the MMO i'm most looking forward too. I so crave an old school group based MMORPG similar to EQ1/FFXI/SWG. It's for a niche playerbase so i'm not expecting much but i also don't invest in paid beta's or early access nonsense so i have nothing to lose.
You crave those 5 second delays between staff swings? That's all you, bro.
Run up to an enemy. Stop. Look at enemy. Stop. Enemy looks at you. Stop. Swing staff. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Enemy swings. Stop.
Enjoy!
I, too, would really love another/modernized early-FFXI (never played SWG, and something about the way EQ1 behaved would make me sick like first person games of that age did). Pretty much resigned myself to the fact that it would never happen again. I've just been reading this thread's bumps for the hilarious decisions this Brad guy has made, but if they can make the game I want I won't have a problem supporting them.
What is a modernized old game? An HD remake? I'm not sure what a "modern" XI would look like because the reason that XI is so beloved by those obsessed with it (aside from it being 1) their first MMO. 2) A complete rip-off of EQ's mechanics with SE's signature on it) is because of those old mechanics. How do you "modernize" old mechanics? Change them and they aren't old anymore.
Punishing, oppressive droprates. Slow world travel speed. Mobs that require teams to kill. Death penalties. MPK. All of these "modernized" would cease to exist due to modernization.
So again, are you asking for a FFXI with HD skins and graphics, with everything else unchanged?
Yes, I meant just things like visuals and *some* QoL things. Though to be honest, and I'm sure this is largely nostalgia-driven, I'm not put off by FFXI's visuals really. I also don't really have a big problem with transportation times and such, but I can see how some (many?) can't stand things like that. A really well-working interface is the key part to bringing older things up to date a lot of the time.
For the sake of discussion, I'm not going to speak of anything off-putting. I'm simply talking about the level of changes you'd want in a remake of XI that wouldn't take away from "dem FF feels" that keep the hardcores stuck to the game like glue. What constitutes a QOL change that wouldn't turn XI into a shell of its former self?
That's not what i'm talking about at all and you know that.
Group based leveling - class interdependence - expanded trinity with support and CC classes - community with reputation mattering - huge open and dangerous world. That's the shit i miss. That's the shit this game is trying to bring back. I'm not holding my breath that it will accomplish any of that, but that's what i crave and i know i'm not the only one. It'll be niche and have a small player base, but that's what i think the genre needs to go back to.
