    Boost Mode
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth’s dungeons feel like Etrian Odyssey, but the battle system is straight out of classic Persona. The Nintendo 3DS game rewards players when they exploit weaknesses with the Boost system.

In addition to doing extra damage, hitting a weak point puts the attacking character into Boost mode. The next time that character takes a turn, their skill cost will not cost any SP. That gives players an opportunity to use really powerful attacks without draining SP.

Boost Mode is also the ticket to doing all out attacks. While in Boost mode you have a chance to do a Follow Up Attack where one character will do an additional attack. If more characters are in Boost Mode you’ll have a higher chance to land an All-Out Attack where the entire five person party strikes.

    StreetPass & new Modes revealed
As you might’ve already determined from yesterday’s leaks, this week’s issue of Famitsu is dense with information on a couple of the upcoming Persona games, with Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth being one of two.

While much of that article is designed to serve as an overview of already known information, some new details have nevertheless been slipped into the magazine, particularly with regard to the game’s StreetPass functionality and the involvement of key Etrian Odyssey staff members.

Similar to other Shin Megami Tensei games on the 3DS, Persona Q‘s StreetPass functionality involves players sharing their Personas with each other. By registering one into a special notebook for public consumptions, players who StreetPass with each other get the other person’s Persona added to their compendium, which can naturally be advantageous for gaining strong Personas sooner rather than later. For players that live too far away to readily StreetPass, they can also replicate this functionality by posting QR codes online.

Another prominent new gameplay mechanic announced in the magazine is the “Sacrificial Fusion.” While powerful Personas have traditionally been gained in the series by fusing two or more together to form a new one, Persona Q also provides the option this time to sacrifice one Persona to strengthen up another. The specifics on how the remaining Persona is strengthened aren’t mentioned in the magazine, except to say that their ability set will resemble that of the sacrificed Persona and that the feature is a way to make use of under-leveled Personas.

A handful of other new features are also detailed. Save slots, for instance, top out at 19, with three readily available on the cartridge itself and another 16 that can be saved to an SD card. There’s also said to be a reward for meticulous cartographers who go out of their way to map out the entirety of the dungeon floor in the form of treasure chests that they can raid for especially advantageous goods. Players who find that to be too much effort aren’t out of luck, though, as they can also unlock access to the chest by paying in Play Coins.

Finally, a handful of prominent members from the Etrian Odyssey team are said to be contributing art and music assets for special enemies that will be appearing in the game. Character designer Yuji Himukai, for example, has done the artwork for a still unknown formidable metallic-looking enemy that the cast will end up fighting at some point in the game.

Complimenting that work is famed composer Yuzo Koshiro, whose music will play when the player encounters Himukai’s enemy. Monster designer Shin Nagasawa is also on board with enemy designs of his own, some of which, such as the ghastly nurses seen in the game’s first trailer and the regal queen-like enemy seen in the Persona 3 version of the third trailer, have already been shown off in existing promotional material.

    Famitsu hands-on
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth has characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4, and puts them in an Etrian Odyssey-style dungeon crawler. The folks at Famitsu shared some of their impressions from a recent hands-on with the game.

Upon starting the game, the very first thing they noticed was that there are three save slots. Additionally, an SD card allows you to create 16 save data slots, which is pretty nice, considering you might want to revisit certain events or play through earlier parts of the game for different choices.

Famitsu points out that once you start the game, they were immediately able to notice how much the super-deformed chibi characters move around and talk, and display various expressions while exploring the dungeons and fighting Shadows.

While Persona Q starts you out at the school festival, where things are nice and cheerful, Famitsu say that the story itself is more on the serious side, which they feel gives it a lot more of the Persona vibe. Meanwhile, as far as dungeon crawling and fighting goes, it has a lot more of an Etrian Odyssey feel, especially with the mapping and F.O.E. features.

While on the subject of mapping, Famitsu points out an interesting feature. As you can see in the above image, the top-right of the screen indicates 51% of the areas you’ve traveled across.

Once you max it out at 100%, a special treasure chest opens somewhere on the floor. These treasures contain very useful items, so it is recommend players take the time to explore. However, those without much time on their hands can also use game coins to open them.

The fights themselves are pretty challenging, too. For example, if you forget to debuff enemies that have high physical attacks, they can easily one-hit-kill your weaker party members. The Leader Skills provides players with a lot of options for these kind of scenarios.

Additionally, the two new characters in Rei and Zen are also said to be full of mysteries, and Famitsu say it is interesting to watch their unique exchanges with one another and the characters of Persona 3 and 4.

    English Translation by Naru Akamine:

Elizabeth: Welcome to the world of Persona Q. My name is Elizabeth, and you are the protagonist of this new adventure. Allow me to speak a little bit about the mysterious story that will unfold...
Elizabeth: One day, you heard the sound of a strange bell. That was the signal to draw in Persona-users from another world. Where you awoke was a creepy school with a large clock tower. In this alternate world where monsters called "Shadows" exist, you will meet many comrades, with whom you will adventure with to find a way back to your own world.
Margaret: What we spoke of just now is just the prologue. Unthinkable twists and turns will be waiting for you up ahead. My apologies. I am Elizabeth's elder sister, Margaret. Along with my younger sister, I shall now guide you through the world of Persona Q.
    Text: Two protagonists
Elizabeth: First, we will have you choose one of two male protagonists. Depending on the boy you choose, a different story will be waiting for you.
    Text: Party creation
Elizabeth: There are a total of 20 comrades you can bring with you. You may choose five at maximum from these characters with variant skills to join you in the labyrinth. Of course, you can always change your party during your adventure. Depending on the characters you choose, you might hear special conversations between them.
    Aegis: Here I go, sub-leader!
    Minato: I'm counting on you!
    Text: Labyrinth exploration & map-drawing
Elizabeth: In this parallel world, you will adventure through a dungeon called a labyrinth.
    Yukiko: Here, it's this way.
Elizabeth: Inside of the labyrinth, extremely powerful enemies called F.O.E.s and various traps await you.
Text: You heard the sound of the gate closing...
Elizabeth: It appears to be a very powerful labyrinth, but if you draw out the paths you've already walked, surveying the area will become a very easy task. As you draw your own unique map, please clear the labyrinth. By the way, the map that I made is a cute tricolor one!
Margaret: Ahem! Are you not a bit worried? Do not fret. There is an "auto-map" option included that can help you with your surveying. It makes it so that anyone can enjoy their journey.
    Text: Battle
Margaret: Inside of the labyrinth, battles with mysterious foes named "Shadows" are waiting for you. You must defeat Shadows using the power of your heart: your Persona. A Persona is another part of yourself that you can summon. It is the power of a mask to face off against Shadows. With this power, at times, gods will appear in the form of demons. You are able to naturally summon your Persona. Depending on the enemy, when a player hits an enemy's weak point, they are able to obtain a boost. Along with being able to have the advantage against an enemy in the next attack, the character will also be able to activate a "pursuit attack." It will become easier for the entire party to activate a "combined attack" that can attack all enemies. This world is not something you can overcome alone.
Elizabeth (speaking over) & Margaret: If you borrow the power of your allies and Personas, you should be able to get close to any enemy.
Elizabeth: You can of course change the difficulty. This way, even if it's your first time adventuring, you can have fun and play till the end.
    Text: Quests
Elizabeth: Within your travels, myself or your allies will give you requests. If you can complete these quests, you will receive compensation. How about accepting many quests throughout the story and making fun memories?
Elizabeth: The meetings made within the other world will eventually grow into deep bonds.
Margaret: Thickening mysteries. A towering gate. Ready, set...
Elizabeth & Margaret: In this parallel world, new meetings and adventures await you. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth.
Margaret: ...We didn't synchronize on anything except the title.
Elizabeth: I request that we do one more take.

    Q & A
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth has characters from Persona 3 and 4, but the gameplay is closer to that of the Etrian Odyssey series. As a result, there will probably be many Persona fans playing the genre for the first time. Dengeki put together a Q&A to help answer questions people might have about the game.

The information below comes from Dengeki’s recent playthrough of the game, and was put together to help answer some of the most common questions they got from people who are new to Persona, dungeon crawlers, and some from players who got to briefly play Persona Q during recent events.

Q: I’m curious about the characters, but the world of Persona Q seems pretty difficult…

A: The game has plenty of explanations, and the new characters who have lost their memories will also have plenty of questions themselves, which will help you out

Q: So there are two protagonists, one from P3 and another from P4. Which one should I pick?

A: The story will connect [between the two of them], so you can pick whichever one you prefer.

Q: There seem to be all kinds of difficulty [settings]; which one should I pick?

A: For beginners, “Safety,” which is full of privileges is recommended. In addition to getting more experience, you can retry after losing a battle.

Q: There are a lot of splendid voice actors in the game. How much do they speak?

A: Main events and cut-scenes are a given, but they also speak during various parts of the game.

Q: I was told that we can “make our own maps” while exploring the labyrinth. I’m not sure if I’m too confident in being able to do so properly…

    A: There’s an auto-mapping feature, so let’s use that!

Q: While exploring the labyrinth, I was attacked by fish and round-shaped enemies. Are these what you call “Shadows”?

A: Yes, there are different types of Shadows.

Q: The “Personas” that the protagonists call out during battle are really awesome! By the way, what exactly is a Persona?

A: They are the embodiment of the strength of one’s heart.

Q: Persona skills are useful, but it’s harsh that they use up SP and HP. Is there anything we can do about that?

A: By hitting an enemy’s weakness, you’ll activate a “Boost status,” which will allow you to attack on your next turn without using any SP or HP.

Q: It’s really cute when characters speak among each other during battle! How can we make them do that more?

A: It could help out if you team up characters who are from the same school, or ones that look like they’d get along together.

Q: Once I got back from the labyrinth, I noticed that I didn’t have any money. I can’t buy any items or recover. What should I do?

A: The Shadows you defeat drop materials. Let’s try selling those.

Q: As I advanced through the story, I gained more characters I could put into my party. Do you have any pointers for putting parties together?

A: Keep the front and back rows in mind, and choose the members you’d like. The more elemental attributes and weaknesses you can cover, the better.

Q: When should I use Leader Skills?

A: You’ll be getting plenty of those, so feel free to use them generously.

Q: The labyrinths are really huge and I can’t find a good time to return. What would be a good time for that?

A: When you enter new areas or if your SP and HP gets low, please don’t hesitate to return.

    Q: How should I select my Sub-Personas?

A: It’s best to have a party that can have skills that cover all the elemental attributes. And let’s not forget about heals!

Q: Getting new Personas through the Persona Fusion system is really fun! Which skills are best to have inherited?

A: It depends on your play-style, but buffs and resistances can be really helpful.

After watching the nico video where they took 30+ minutes to kill a single FOE I realize this probably isn't my kind of game.

If this didn't happen I would think the game would have done a disservice to the EO fanbase that is interested in this game.

What difficulty were they playing on--do you know? Doesn't this game have like 5 difficulty settings?
Safety, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Risky?

TBR. You going in Hard or Risky? I will mirror you. :X

Edit: I am almost 90% certain I will buy this game for my JP 3DS. I don't think I can wait.

If it's like any other EO game, there will be two difficulties: Not So Fucked (eg sent back to town on party wipe, etc) and Get Fucked.

Clearly the difficulty I'm playing on will be obvious.

EDIT: Looking at them now. Probably Hard. Risky would be 2nd playthrough.

    Elizabeth & Margret
Elizabeth and her sister Margaret introduced other characters in Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, but this time the Velvet Room sisters are in the spotlight.

Starting with the younger sister Elizabeth who explains that everything happens for a reason in the Velvet Room. Since the protagonist is in there, there must be a reason for it. As a resident of the Velvet Room, she’ll do everything she can to help you out.

The video then shows her looking more excited than usual in the midst of the school festivities, which also looks like it’ll be her first time trying out some takoyaki.

At 0:43, we also get to see her in what appears to be some sort of battle. While it doesn’t reveal whether she’ll be a playable character or not, it could also mean that she could be another secret boss as before.

Next up is the elder sister Margaret, who starts out by saying something is about to start, and that the cards are whispering that a strange case is awaiting you. Similar to her Elizabeth, she explains that it is her destiny to help you out, as she looks forward to seeing what happens in the story about the change of fate.

Margaret shows some interest in takoyaki (especially what’s inside it) and is shown having a weakness for cute-looking sweets. Towards the end of the video, she looks at Elizabeth and tells her that she’s happy to see her again, and that it’s been a while.
