    Notes:
    • Announcement
      Spoiler: show
Warner Bros. has already begun work on a sequel to “The Lego Movie,” the upcoming animated film based on the popular kids’ toys, according to two individuals with knowledge of the studio’s plans. Jared Stern, who wrote “The Internship” and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” is working on the script with Michelle Morgan (“Girl Most Likely”).

Advanced market research indicates “The Lego Movie” will be a huge hit, grossing upwards of $40 millon this weekend. It should breeze to a win at the box office over fellow new releases “the Monuments Men” and “Vampire Academy.”

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote the first “Lego,” which Village Roadshow co-produced and co-financed. Stern’s involvement is born out of the creative consortium of top-notch writers and directors Warner Bros. created to foster new animated projects. “The Lego Movie” was greenlit before the formation of this consortium, but it is the studio’s first animated release since it decided to put it together. Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Stern is one member of that group alongside Lord and Miller, “Muppets” writer/director Nicholas Stoller, who is working on “Storks” and “Bad Santa” writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who are working on “Smallfoot.” Each of those filmmakers is working on a specific project, but they will also provide guidance and feedback on some of the other projects being developed.

    Release date announced
The LEGO Movie is blowing up at the box office and has recently surpassed $200 million worldwide. The sequel to the film has already been announced, and Warner Bros. has set its release for May 26th, 2017.

The studio has already hired Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) and Michelle Morgan to write the script. There's no word on or Chris Lord and Phil Miller will return to direct it. I assume most of the original cast will be back to reprise their roles, though. That cast includes Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, and Alison Brie.

That was fast, holy crap o_O I didn't know the movie was doing so well, but it's LEGO and everyone loves LEGO (apparently).

I hope it'll be as good and even funnier than the first one.

LEGO's high quality production aside, it's floating on very high weekly averages because look at its pathetic competition. The only things on the horizon are...a sequel and that Peabody & Sherman piece of shit. The producers knew exactly when to release this movie lol.

Nah, couldn't have anything to do with the stellar reviews it's been getting. That can't be why it's being successful.

It's probably a bit of both. Aside from the Lego movie there hasn't been a movie I've been interested to go see in the theater since The Hobbit. Everything looks like utter shit or is remakes of shit that was probably better off left alone. But the Lego movie was actually quite good too - there was really nothing to complain about.

When did I say otherwise? I said it would have higher week to week drops if it were up against good movies. It won't be, not for a while.

not necessarily. A solid kids movie will do excellent during the summer months as parents look for an AC'd place to keep kids occupied for a couple of hours. Now yes, if they released it at the same time frame as Frozen, you probably would have seen both go through some drops. 29% from first to second week is a low drop, and this current week was about 37%. That first week may have been in the 35-40% range in the summer, but it probably would have done substantially more as well.

Opened at $34.4M, $20M lower than Lego: Batman and $35M lower than the first film, but it fared better than the Ninjago release.
