Finally watched Sunday's episode last night. I was getting Michael Scott vibes from Richard when he was trying to act disappointed.

At this point I'd assume they'll have Jian Yang oust Erlich in some capacity.

There's still a scene with him smoking in the pool from the full season preview that we haven't seen, and no way Erlich would give him those kind of pool privileges.

they need to stop hitting the reset button every season and change the status quo a little bit, I mean it's still a funny show, but the story is getting a bit stale at this point

maybe with Erlich gone that's gonna happen

The finale definitely fell flat for me as well. The writers are caught in this circular plot structure where Pied Piper gets a huge break, Richard compromises it, and they fall back to square one. They'll hit rock bottom, then get a lifesaver out of nowhere to salvage the company and they're flooded with VC funding offers. Next season starts, rinse and repeat.

Truthfully it's disappointing because at four seasons in, you definitely want to see some (any) progress, especially when there are only 10 <30-minute episodes per season. I realize the show's premise is about their trials and tribulations as a fledgling company with a ground-breaking idea/tech, but there has to be something beyond that, especially having pivoted multiple times (compression algorithm, video chat, new internet, mass localized storage, etc). Hell, even Monica's arc has seen much more progress than anyone else

Anyways, there was a pretty interesting article a couple days ago that begins to explain how the relationship between Miller and the showrunners (specifically Alec Berg) slowly fell apart, as well as a six-season plan for the overall show. There's a second article that adds some more context as well.

With the six season thing in mind, I'm hoping season 5 takes a few more risks than anything up until now.

The return of Epical?

I agree with what everyone's said. I've mentioned it to my wife before as well; it gets boring when it's the same thing over and over again.

I did like seeing "Suck it Jiang Yang" on the smart fridges, though. Especially the face of the salesman as he walked down the row of smart fridges.

If the show stopped being funny the cyclic nature would bug me, but at the end of the day it's a comedy show that makes me laugh (alot) so I can forgive many of its sins.

The return of Epical?

I agree though that the comedy trumps the lack of plot progression, especially being able to watch Zach Woods work his magic. Since he came from the UCB/improv circuits a lot of people didn't know who he was despite things like his short stint on The Office. Mark my words though, once Silicon Valley ends, he is going to blow up in the comedy world (or at least as much as his meek persona will allow).
