Into Darkness had some issues with it, but if this movie at the very least still has solid action with a story that doesn't make me cringe it'll be a good time.

Was that Jonathan Archer's Enterprise they were flying around in at the end?

Just going into this with the desire to be entertained. Can't expect much more.
I love the casting choices but I just have to resign myself (again) to dealing with Trek movies being action movies.
I'm not a big Star Trek fan that knows all about the franchize, but from my limited understanding, I would surmize that early series, especially the Kirk years, involved earlier times in the Star Fleets expansion. With that said, it's not surprising that they encounter more enemies and hostile species than, say, they did during Picard years, no?
With a little bit of Google-Fu I came accross this.
Common plots:
- Kirk leads a landing party to a Planet of Hats, a recurring one being a society that perfectly mirrors one from Earth history. Their hosts rudely steal their communicators and phasers, usually because they just can't bear to let them leave. If captured, our heroes may escape by Dressing as the Enemy. Lots of running around and fistfights ensue. At the end, Kirk gives a Kirk Summation to point out what's wrong with the planet's Hat.
- Alternatively, the Planet of Hats will be a Cargo Cult worshipping a very theatrical god who turns out to be a computer. Kirk will show the natives how to outgrow such silly superstitions by dropping a Logic Bomb on it.
- The ship encounters a Negative Space Wedgie, which is defeated through Techno Babble or Deus Ex Nukina.
- A Sufficiently Advanced Alien is unkind, possibly putting Humanity on Trial.
- Our heroes get infected by The Plague and have to defeat it while being adversely affected.
- A godlike being will stow away or end up on the ship and wreak havoc with the crew, often manipulating laws of physics/reality or screwing with people's minds (examples: Charlie Evans, Gary Mitchell, the salt creature from "The Man Trap", the disease from "The Naked Time", Id-Kirk, Kirk Android, and that's just in the first seven episodes.)
- A Mad Scientist has plans for the crew. If alien, the scientist may be attempting to understand humans. If it's a female alien, she will ask Kirk What Is This Thing You Call Love? He will show her.
Kirk matches wits with a Worthy Opponent.

I'll still watch it. I've been entertained by both of the newer films. I expect the same from this one.

Welp. :/
Anton Yelchin, actor best known for playing Chekov in the new 'Star Trek' films, dies at 27 in a traffic crash.
Guessing they'll throw a lil dedication in after the film for him. I enjoyed his Chekov.
He'll be missed

That blows. I thought he was great.
what the fuck is even going on this year, deaths everywhere
So apparently what happened was his 2014 Grand Cherokee slipped into Neutral and rolled, fatally pinning him against a fence. That year model is under recall for multiple issues with its electronic shifter but the issue can't be fixed until "later this year" according to Fiat Chrysler.
I have a friend that owns that year model. It's been the subject of at least 10 recalls. Chrysler may (finally) be in the shit for this. Too bad it took a famous actor's death to draw any attention to it.
Welp. They're in deep shit now.
It is beyond me why the Cherokee was ever changed from the late 90s model. I've been driving the same 99 Cherokee for 17 years with no end in sight.
