Saw it quite well from my sisters house. Watched it with my sister BiL and nephew. Was pretty cool

Saw it here in south florida just as it hit climax, but then clouds covered it long enough for me to give up and go to bed. Maybe next time!

We had bad weather here so I only caught the tail end of it. Anxiously awaiting August 21st, 2017...total solar eclipse in the US!

Missed it totally fogged over last night.

If you missed it, don't feel bad. This exact positioning is rare, but the moon turning red isn't. Any time the full moon lies in the ecliptic can cause that to happen and eclipses are actually quite common. Their totality and visibility from a specific spot on the earth, no so much.

This I am aware of I took photos of the last lunar eclipse a couple years ago and the moon was beautifully red. For me I enjoy landscape photography a lot and this eclipse appealed to me because the moon was going to be at its deepest red just above the horizon which makes for great photos. The next lunar eclipses will happen with the moon high in the sky which makes for less compelling photos.

    What about a red sun?

Gonna have to wait several billion years for that.

Won't be an earth 7 billion years from now.

Turning into a red giant isn't instantaneous and as the sun does so (and as it dies) the earth will be gone as it transitions.

From what I have read Earth will be around to get enveloped by the sun as it becomes a red giant.

    Correct

Edit: Barring other things that aren't predictable, correct.

I imagine in several billion years we will at least be able to populate our corner of the galaxy and be out of the solar system.

We have to have Gundams to protect the colonies.

Especially with all of them Zentradi that are supposed to have invaded us by now. Are they all micronized?

    Bump

Mars was at opposition earlier this week where it tripled its apparent size when looking through a telescope. The distance between Earth and Mars at this time was roughly 0.5 AU (1 AU is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun). The next opposition of mars occurs in 2018 where the distance between the Earth and Mars will be 0.38 AU.

You didn't need a telescope to see the difference. It was pretty dramatic and orange in the sky the last couple of nights.

On Saturday August 27th, Venus and Jupiter will be less than 1/2 of a degree apart just after sunset

Scientist have confirmed an earthlike planet orbiting the Red Dwarf star Proximua Centauri which is located 4.25 light years away (Closest star to us).

No way I can see that from where I am in Florida. If you could take some pictures that'd be great!

So I'm on call this week at Chandra X-ray observatory which means I'm in charge of handling all the quick turnaround targets and interrupting the current schedule on the satellite. About 5 minutes ago I just got paged for request for time for an observation of Proxima Centuri to follow-up on the transit of the exoplanet posted above.

    P. Cool.
