Totally planned, but being less (or more) cynical makes me think some old ass money shit bag who doesn't care about the product and just wants to cash in totally pushed for some lazy/ez design and thought it would fly because ugly TMNT exists or kids don't know/care how Sonic looks really.

I dunno, I feel like this was planned but in the sense that the people who are actually working on this (who probably care more about Sonic than those funding it) only did enough work to make a trailer because they knew the internet would die with that design, so after the backlash they could get on with their "real" Sonic design.

Either way, what a ride.

Why pay for test audiences and focus groups when your trailer can be a barometer for Sonic's design. It was also free advertising with all the memes that erupted. Some galaxy brain shit right there.

We all knew this was the case, at least somewhere in the back of our minds.

Don’t think I ever made the claim here but I know I’ve made it elsewhere that there’s no way this redesign would have ever happened if the entire movie had to be reshot from scratch. It was viral marketing + good boy points for “listening”. Old Sonic design was nightmare fuel, broke every rule of design for a character like Sonic who’s main audience pull was kids. Hollywood can make some dumb choices sure but old Sonic was like a sleep paralysis beast, it was never the design. .

Whether or not it was intentional, I still hope a lot of people see this movie so the idea of "putting in effort to make good shit usually pays off better than making bad shit" finally sinks in for Hollywood. I don't know why this is such a difficult concept for them.

After the backlash Paramount Pictures received following the reveal of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, steps were taken to redesign the lead character. As you'll likely know, the redesign has gone down a treat with fans, but now it would appear that a studio responsible for the welcome change is being closed down.

The studio in question is Moving Picture Company's Vancouver office, a division which reportedly housed more than 800 artists during its peak several years ago, and which was responsible for the redesign's animation. The news comes from a CBC report, who claims to have obtained an email sent to staff members announcing the closure.

According to CBC, this email cited "increasing external market pressures" in Vancouver as a factor, and said that the "decision has not been taken lightly". It's not currently known how many people will be left out of work thanks to the closure and it would appear that the company's other studios - such as its London HQ, Montreal, London, and Los Angeles offices - are still safe.
