Sonic creator Yuji Naka (now hilariously a SquareEnix employee) is confused and disgusted with the design.

Sonic’s design in the upcoming movie adaptation was leaked instead of being officially revealed. I think it’s part of the movie’s marketing strategy and they purposely leaked it, but it triggered a lot of negative reactions, which may also damage Sonic’s image as an IP so it’s not a good thing. Well, it’s also possible these pictures are fakes made by some fans, but I wish they’d at least give him a pair of gloves. It’s really shocking how Sonic’s hands themselves are white.

He commissioned a friend to render a better design. It's way better. What a shitshow.

I'm not surprised. He's the co-creator of the intellectual property, and often cited as designing Sonic personally.
The character became a mainstay in the industry that's lasted 28 years and well outlived the SEGA hardware it was designed to move.

Better fucking believe Miyamoto sees this and is writing stern emails to ensure Mario looks like Mario in the upcoming rival film.

There was probably some math involved that X amount of current or recent moves are animated for the demographic vs live action and what was projected to generate the most buzz/reaction/merchandise/revenue.

Probably a production cost-saving measure. Full CGI ($$$$) vs full practical effects ($$$) vs the shot-for-shot remake of Ted we're getting instead ($).
