Holding off to get the Fantastic Four rights back and then Galactus becomes the new Big Bad.

If the movie is faithful to the comics we will see the Celestials. At least one of them I guess.

I’ve heard Marvel/Disney was leaning towards Secret Invasion/Skrulls/Kree arc. They’ve already shown the Kree in GotG, and we’ve seen the Skrull language in AoS. Part of it depends on them getting the copyright from 20th Century. Originally, the Skrulls were set to be the main villain/army helping Loki in the early drafts of the Avengers. But Marvel has to change that, because the Skrull were originally a Fantastic Four villain, so they had to change that. Marvel/Disney going that route would also allow characters to be killed off due to the actors contracts running out, then if they renegotiate and get the to re-sign, then they can retcon it as that character having actually been a Skrull agent.

Chitauri was originally another name for the Skrulls, then the movie came out and the comics retconned the Chitauri to being their own separate race.

Marvel has the rights to the Skrulls. They are confirmed as being part of Captain Marvel.

There's been a lot of backdoor dealings IIRC. Like Marvel gave Fox something in order to get the rights to Ego for GotG2.

Marvel can use the Skrull race, but not the specific characters that appeared in FF like Super Skrull.
