I think people tend to be ridiculous with this. Gameplay IS the most important part. A good narrative however can carry mediocre gameplay. If your gameplay is shit, your game is shit. If your narrative is shit, I might get pulled out of the game and have no interest. Having no story is many times better than having shit story.
I think storyfags are the only ones who are ridiculous with it.
If Bayonetta had the worst story in the world, that would not be good but I would still play the fuck out of it because holy shit what a fantastic game regardless.
Video Games seldom have exceptional plots; it's the elements of characterization, structure and world that they usually accomplish with a deft hand. Saying Bayonetta has a mediocre story is probably not that far fetched, but the world and characters that occupy that narrative are anything but.
I am also glad that we have established that Bayonetta, is in fact, awesome.
