Feel Good, Warm and Fuzzy Police News Thread

To counter all the ridiculousness and bad behavior highlighted in the other police news thread, I thought I would create a thread about good things the police in America are doing. Thanks for the idea Bane.

The Portland Police Sunshine Division works with the Portland Rescue Mission, Oregon Food Bank, and several other local charities to provide food assistance to families and homeless citizens in need. Many other municipalities do this as well. Individual officers also carry around blankets and warm coats in the winter to give to people who have nowhere warm to go. Often these blankets and coats are paid for by the officer. My cousin is a sheriff's deputy who regularly goes to the secondhand stores and buys as many coats as he can. http://www.sunshinedivision.org/

One of countless stories you find when googling "police" and "baby" together:

Contra Coasta, CA — A man’s life savings has been recovered after an off-duty California Highway Patrol sergeant found over $125,000 in cash in the middle of a Concord roadway.
    ...
Here is where the story gets interesting, she didn’t try to keep it for herself or bring it to the evidence locker or try and justify keeping the money for the department. The Concord police actually located the owner of the lost cash and returned it to him!

They didn’t try to arrest him for having the cash or hold it while they “investigated” it.

In a prepared statement, the sergeant said returning the money was simply “the right thing to do.”

Today, I watched a cop stop in an abandoned lot and feed about 10 cats that were hiding under a pile of trash there. It looked like he did this regularly because the cats all came out when he approached. I don't even like cats and it cheered me up from the terrible mood I was in.

In other news, another story of an officer buying something for a person with no money instead of punishing them for having no money.

Patients and their families at the ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital in Ohio had a Halloween they will never forget, last week. On Oct. 30, members of the Toledo police SWAT team donned superhero costumes and arrived on the hospital roof via helicopter, according to ProMedica's YouTube page. The team then scaled down the building and surprised children at their windows, acting as heroes in a staged heist.

"It was awesome," police patrolman Matt Slaman, aka Wolverine, told ABC13 of the experience. " To see all the kids ... as you're going down the floor -- all those people in their rooms -- you can see their faces light up. So, you're really seeing you're bringing some joy in their life."

Appearances were made by Thor, Superman and the Hulk, among other famous heroes and comic book characters. The characters' grand introduction was viewed on a TV indoors, featuring a newscaster. The group's "mission" was to stop the sinister Dr. Trickster, whose plan was to ruin Halloween in Toledo. The good guys descended the building -- Spider-Man climbing upside-down -- and met their villain on the ground, defeating him once and for all.

The act ended with a pre-recorded video of Dr. Trickster being taken into custody by the SWAT team. The heroes proceeded to take pictures with their fans and their families, according to the Toledo Blade.

The SWAT team was inspired by different stories of window washers dressing up as superheroes and surprising sick kids, the outlet reported. Those involved said they had a blast bringing smiles to the faces of those inside. The children watching were pretty pleased with the heroes' crime-fighting as well.

"It was pretty cool," said Nicholas Pinkstaff, an 8-year-old at the hospital, told the Blade.

The heroes successfully spread the magic of Halloween to the children and their families this year, and, Slaman says, he hopes to come back to bring more cheer to the hospital for years to come, ABC13 reported.

State Police Logan Assists With Infant In Cardiac Arrest

On November 6, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. the pilot of inbound Jet Blue flight 1786 from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, reported a medical emergency, stating a toddler on board was in cardiac arrest. Trooper John Morris escorted an ambulance from the North Gate to Gate 31 where he and Troopers Timothy Gillespie, Timothy Leeman and Timothy Foley assisted in the transfer of the infant from the plane to the ambulance.

Troopers closed the ramp interchange at Route 1 briefly for the ambulance to proceed through towards Massachusetts General Hospital. Trooper John Morris and Trooper Bruce Adams assisted in closing intersections on the way to the hospital. Trooper Bruce Adams transported the father and brother of the infant to the hospital.

The toddler was identified as a two year old from Needham. When Trooper Morris departed the hospital he stated that the toddler had been revived.

San Diego Policemen purchases a stove for a poverty stricken family - with their own money!
So nice to see police doing good in their communities

Officers Rivas & Castro, from Central Division, deliver an electric stove to a poverty stricken family in Barrio Logan. They met the family during their patrol duties and saw them living in poor conditions. The family barely had a working stove. Officers spent their own money and bought a
    stove for the family.

Officer Rivas invited the family to a community Thanksgiving dinner coordinated by him and church groups. He is also working with different groups to improve the families living conditions.

The Guardian of the Golden Gate Making a Difference One Life at a Time

For some reason, the Golden Gate Bridge is a destination for those who would wish to end their lives by suicide. Standing 245 ft above the water, the Golden Gate is the common location in the U.S. for suicide (second in the world to a bridge in China). In 2013 alone, there were 46 successful suicide jumps from the bridge with another 118 prevented. These numbers, however, would be much worse if it weren’t for California Highway Patrolman Kevin Briggs. In 22 years of service he has only lost one person off the bridge to suicide on his watch. Patrolman Briggs, aka Guardian of the Golden Gate, says he can expect to deal with someone attempting suicide once every couple of weeks.

Meh, let's try to keep this thread somewhat on topic. People get reamed for "trolling" in the other thread as it is.
