At the G-Star 2014 show in Korea, NCsoft has unveiled a new mecha third-person-shooter called Project HON (with “HON” standing for “Humanoid robot On Neuro-control”). Unlike NCsoft’s previous games this is much more of a direct action title. It’s also using Unreal Engine 4 and is expected to be released on PC next year, though later console versions haven’t been ruled out.
From the gameplay video, it’s not obvious how the game will work as a whole but there is enough to see that it appears similar to From Software’s recent Armored Core V and Verdict Day games. The mecha designs alone are very much in the same vein, operating at both a similar scale and with a comparable weapon and mobility load-out.
The team has also openly cited influences from anime such as Mospeada and Macross, both of which have transforming mecha. There also appears to be a rather interesting grapple mechanic going on as well.
Massively multiplayer online elements may also be present in Project HON and the videos released do indicate a very large multiplayer type game, so that would tie in with NCsoft’s prior expertise at least.
