I think the Last Remnant pull more points to an HD remake of some kind, so they want to make sure no one has the option of buying the older, cheaper one.

It was very weird how it wanted you to go for stat boosts and made actual levels a downside b/c you would get fucked up hard.

Probably because 7 had a decent PC release (after fixes) and 9 was remastered. 8 got a shitty PC port that was never fixed as far as I know so they haven't bothered yet...

It has more to do with what assets remained from Square's great data purges of the early oughts.
Basically all the original game data from every PS1 title they made in the 90s has been mostly deleted.

FF7 and FF9 (especially 9) had far more assets to work with than FF8 (which had almost none), so the outsourced devs SE hired looked to the 1999 PC CD-ROM build for assets. The 2013 Steam release is basically a glorified upscale of that 1999 PC release, which itself was a completely shit port of one of the later NTSC PS1 builds. It's also why the Steam release uses the abominable MIDI sounds of the 1999 version, whereas the FF7 and FF9 ports have had their audio effectively restored to original PS1 quality.

I'm sure SE is doing whatever they can to port the Steam version to Switch. Can't imagine they'd pass on a 6th opportunity to re-sell us this 20 year old game.

There are finished copies of these games out there and Bluepoint has proved you can reverse engineer them to get what you need. Granted that they've been doing so with PS2 games but I'm sure something similar can be done with these games as well. It'll probably cost a lot more than just using what you have but if you have nothing at all there's not much else to do...

In Japanland, an announcement that someone famous is quitting all work to go on hiatus for vague health reasons usually means that the person in question is sick with a very serious disease.
I hope that isn't the case here.
