I didn't watch A New Hope in its entirety until high school, after the prequels were out. But I can still tell you the OT is better than either other set. The prequels suffer from terrible directing/acting, but are limited in scope and manage to bumble into where they need to go. The OT is flawed but ok as far as sci-fi goes. The new trilogy just doesn't have an identity. TFA relies on nostalgia and TLJ seemed extremely aimless.
The problem with TFA is that it doesn't really feel like the wider story has moved forward in any significant way (maybe RoS will change this). It was just like, here's your Han, Leia, and Luke replacements. Here's Death Star 3.0. Here's the Empire 2.0. Here's your Vader and Emperor replacements.
Even other stories that aren't written the best can take us through multiple generations in a way where there can be unifying themes and recurring elements without feeling repetitive. Naruto is a great example of that. Naruto and Sasuke are the latest rivalry in a long line of Uchiha and Senju successors. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are the third iteration of the same basic team composition. Naruto is predestined to be Hokage from what is essentially a single line of teachers from the founding of the Hidden Leaf. Yet we are still invested in the characters and this "chapter" of the story of the universe.
