200 Years before Man of Steel
For a lot of people, the Krypton-set Man of Steel prologue was a highlight of the film, and yeah, you got to watch Russell Crowe ride a soaring dragon beast, so, obviously. Goyer talked about having the opportunity to “pull back the curtain” on Superman’s home planet, but also noted that the initial script had forty pages worth of material set on Krypton, with the final cut amounting to just about 15 minutes.
Part of the fun of doing Man of Steel — and I was so insistent on setting that opening on Krypton and really seeing it, was pulling back the curtain. The first draft, the first forty pages were on Krypton, so we compressed that all down to fifteen minutes and there were a lot of ideas that I wanted to use in the film that didn’t ultimately make it into the film.
While some of those ideas may end up popping up in Krypton, there probably won’t be a ton of overlap since Goyer says the series is set “200 years before”. There’s also the small matter of TV budget and production value (though it’s worth noting that the network recently threw down a massive budget for their space epic The Expanse and the result is a fantastic looking pilot.) Even so, you’re not going to get an effects budget on par with a major studio blockbuster on Syfy, and Goyer knows it, pointing out that the series would pick it’s moments, and focus more intently on the characters and Kryptonian culture.
