It's the same deal as always; a bunch of folks rotating in to speedrun games for nearly a solid week to garner donations for charity. (click the banner for more info)

What's a speedrun? Generally, it's the act of clearing a particular objective in a game as quickly as possible. In most cases it's simply seeing the end credits from the start of a fresh playthrough, but there's a plethora of sub-categories as well that runners can abide by. It involves a sheer number of hours of practice of mastering and memorizing a game inside-out to optimize your run as much as possible without human error.

Examples of the common speedrun categories are

• any% - simply just clearing the game, which is what you'll primarily see at AGDQ2015
• low% - clearing with the lowest completion rating if a game tracks it; typically involves using glitches or clever tricks to skip otherwise mandatory pickups that would bring up the completion score
• 100% runs - doing all the optional content/collectibles
• glitchfests - abusing bugs to break apart or skip large portions of a game, and other devious goods; very common in TAS runs where you remove human error from the equation to do extremely precise or humanly impossible glitches
• Game settings such as single-player/co-op, difficulty levels, etc, get broken down into their own categories as well.

The last AGDQ was kinda something with the 4-way Super Metroid Race, the Blindfolded Punchouts, and the Beautifulohbabyyeah Goldeneye 007 runs.

AGDQ is the shit. Looking at the schedule:

• Transistor - love this game, really interested to see how the speed run goes
• Super Monkey Ball - Maybe no harder than other games, but always looks impressive as hell
• Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II - just a great game, never seen a speed run before
• Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - love that there are several fundamentally different ways to speedrun this game, hope we see something new
• Goldeneye - 4 way races are always the highlight of AGDQ, this will probably be the best event they have
• Super Metroid - These races are always epic, a shame it's not 4-way

Main thing I'm looking forward to. Lots of 4-way races this year, and the Awful Games block looking decent.
