Maybe cuz GitS:SAC is more transmutable than the 1995 film into your typical Hollywood cyber thriller/political espionage drama.

Filming has begun, Synopsis released
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
I'm okay with it.
ill wait for a trailer..
the mecha and cybernetics stuff better be on fucking point
I think what annoys me is that there is a reason you cast Jason Statham or Jet Li for roles, right? Decent looking dudes (jet li is like 5'2") but who don't really need stunt doubles. Action sequences flow a bit better.
This is one of those roles where I think you need a female version of someone who doesn't really need a stunt double. Obviously still need choreography and shit, but as BW the camera needs to cut or change angle every .5 seconds every time she fights.
I get the making money. I get that most people wont care. But it's going to annoy me enough to give them my money.
Updated the OP with known info. They're retelling the Laughing Man storyline.
ScarJo is really not pulling off Motoko. At least, not from that pic. Looks like bad cosplay.
I just have no faith that ScarJo can do this.
I'm pretty sure, if he ever gets around to it, James Cameron could successfully pull off a live-action Battle Angel Alita.
But otherwise, yeah.
Why do I get the feeling that the only reason there doing the Laughing Man story is so they can appear all edgy by referencing Catcher in The Rye.
I guess I'd look to it as a similar case with Wonder Woman and how some wanted Gina Cerano instead of Gal Gadot. Unfortunately, employing women with any sense of prominent musculature for a main role in Hollywood seems to be taboo, which affects both hero movies and even anime/manga adaptations. Some might argue such women can't act, thus would be undeserving of such roles, but I'm not really sold on that possibility. In this case, I think they're just trying to ride ScarJo's name even though I've never personally understood her appeal.
She was eye candy for a few good movies, but now her lack of acting skill overshadows her beauty for me. It's the same expression, with the same cuts in her action scenes. I'm just bored with her.
To be fair, a limited range fits with the Major, the film version most of all.
But Rinko Kikuchi or even Doona Bae could do the same.
Though, looking at Bae's fight scenes in Sense8 again, her's seem fairly cut happy too.
Major never "looked" asian though. All I see is hot as fuck white woman with purple hair in Gits.
A lot of anime chicks don't actually look asian.
Ethnicity kinda goes out the window when your body is mostly artificial, too.
Hasn't stopped people from going bonkers over the casting though still.
New report says that Paramount considered using CGI to make non Asian actors look Asian..
