    Google Fiber is giving up

    The Alphabet division that operates Google Fiber is laying off or reassigning about nine percent of its staff as well as "pausing" or ending fiber operations in 10 cities where it hadn't yet fully committed to building.

    Google Fiber chief Craig Barratt will step down from his post and remain only as an adviser. He won't be replaced immediately. This is not the end of Google Fiber, however: the Alphabet-owned ISP already offers fiber Internet service in eight metro areas and is still committed to building in another four. Google Fiber also recently purchased a wireless ISP called Webpass, which offers high-speed wireless Internet in six metro areas and seems set on expanding wireless service going forward.

    Verizon Fio's growth is pretty depressing after 10 years as well so this doesn't really come as a shock.

    The future of America's ISPs will likely come trying to go wireless with 5G broadband (Or whatever they decide to call it). Much easier than trying to replace copper infrastructure and trying to fight for the rights to do so.

    If this country had a lot higher density, cost of physical infrastructure wouldn't be such a big deal. Alas, most cities are large suburban sprawls that the cost of coverage/sq mile is way too expensive for any private company to undertake.

    Edit: guess it became even more official with the CEO departure, but like I think I said previously, I had two high Google reps tell me straight to my face that the Fiber project was being cut even in cities it previously promised to roll out to.

    idk they are pretty fast. They brought the line to my house a week ago after I signed up on 12/16 or so. Waiting for hardware/install etc... dont' know how long that will be.
