Random Tech (or IT Work!) Fail

Old ISA server scheduled for replacement next month decided to (software) croak today, entire company without mail on mobile, owa or app, only Outlook (etc.) works. Everyone blaming me of course, but management didn't want to allocate the funds to replace it any sooner. FML.
Got some specialists in that tech trying to get it back up, hopefully they'll pull it off, or will restore a backup, but still ><

My corporation implemented a new system for HR that encompasses pretty much everything HR related into one singular system (I don't know who's bright idea that was but whatever, outside my pay grade). Do a soft launch Thursday and the rest yesterday. Most users were okay, but about 1/5th were getting errors opening up the system. I don't know why they decided to go with another fucking Java based system, it's usually the root cause for a lot of our stuff.

So today the single HR person working in scheduling today had this problem, couldn't launch the application. She made the project and technical lead group aware of the issue but fuck all was done in the last two days. Right off I suspect Java and after confirming the version that's stable with it was installed, I cleared the Java temp folder.

Voila. People making 2/3 times my wage can't do simple troubleshooting on their own systems.

Oh well, at least its been quiet for the rest of the day so far. As it should be on weekends.

I raise a ticket to get a DNS (domain) entry updated to point to a new IP.

1 hour later, I get calls left and right that the entire site is down... I load up my domain tools....

The domain's IP has been deleted and replaced with a blank IP.

WHAT THE FLYING FUCK.

Stuck on call with the provider now.

Ah we're in UK, london, so I believe that would just be a coincidence.

After some time on the phone they mysteriously fixed it (added back the domain and the new IP address originally requested) but refused to tell me what happened.

I was alright with that, as I said don't worry, the bigger fish will be on you. My job is just to make sure it's fixed lol

Working on a semi-big project regarding MFPs and securing prints (and follow-me and the works). Am in charge of the project (and IT in the company in general). People in several of the companies submitting bids to become our provider tries to go over my head and straight to the CEO. Yes, that'll make me positive towards their products and professionalism!

I love that shit, there is always one or two vendors who try this. I also love when they try to back track after they are told you are the PoC and will be the one making the choice.

So user pops into my office today, can't find anything on her computer. I take one look at it and have to tell her "This isn't one of our computers" (our client park is 99% Windows 10 running on i5 or up with SSDs, she's standing there with an at least 7-8 year old Windows Vista Computer). She looks at me, goes wideeyed, "oh shit...". But, had the good sense to apologize and set off to fetch the work client from home.

I've never heard of an 80gb hard drive since 2008... I was well amused. It even came with a small pouch...!!!!

Can find a lot of remnants of other stuff in there as well. Also, chromium is a thing: http://www.chromium.org/ It's not malware, it's an open source version of chrome. The plugins though can be shit and need killing. Get ublock origin or adblock plus to help.

Use https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/ instead of malwarebytes. It's not failed me so far. I don't touch malwarebytes anymore. I accidentally added Chromium to my work PC too once, it was a slightly entertaining hour removing it. (My devices are like extensions of my own body, I know if something is wrong usually).

Ah ok fair enough. I had a second/after thought, don't not use Malwarebytes though in general, I'm just knowledgable enough to know I am clean for myself so I don't use it anymore, but as you're doing it for work, you want multiple tools. I suspect it might help with general day to day sweeping or cleaning up loose ends!

Jupp, the downside to having to deal with about 200 laptops and a lot more than that users is that there's always going to be several of "that guy" who "heard it from a friend/neighbour/nephew" etc., and when the company is too cheap to spring for sccm or similar solutions, there are limits to how much you can lock down. And a lot of installers manage to circumvent the standard user lockouts in Windows (all our training computers have just local user rights, no admin of any sort, yet they still manage to install crap sometimes)
