One of my previous responsibilities of an application with my client was overshadowed by a guy the client employed. That's fine. I get asked every now and then about it but nothing complex. Sometime later my contract with the client renewed, excluding this application from it. The guy they employed has left sometime after that.

There is now a silly game of not letting me do anything with the application until the contract is adjusted.

For this application, I've not been disabled or lost my god privileges. I still have 100% access. Until the contract is adjusted, I just stand by, making doing the odd ultra urgent fix/investigation out of goodwill, but everything else is ignored.

This is nearly done, but for some reason, as part of this adjustment, the client, and my company, are saying they need to create entirely separate credentials for the server and the application for myself, I'm not allowed to use my current one. I ask why, and they said it's to differentiate my day to day work and the work I do for this application.

But the thing is, I don't ever touch the server/application unless I need to go fix something... making this all a bit moot... I tried to protest but very quickly ended on "nevermind... just roll with it" lol

I used to be the type that protested, or attempted to educate the people making the calls when they are doing something dumb or uncalled for. My life became incredibly stress free and easier once i jumped on the fuck'it train.

You want me to change the way i do XYZ, which makes it take 3 times longer? Sure, ok..... goes back to doing it the way i want and let them think i'm doing it that way.

Yeh I agree. I was already on that train but I thought for this I could maybe save some work by saying it doesn't make a difference, but nope. Extra work for other admins to create my accounts!

I just enjoy the red tape around the work. If something that can take 5 mins can take 2 weeks because of procedures/testing/approvals then I'm all for it. Definitely don't mind anymore. No use expending effort/emotions to get annoyed over work, just accept there's things in place we have to follow, and go on.

Yup, I work for the government.... I came from a fast paced, always need the newest and best, upgrade asap, I don't care about cost environment. Then I started the government work.... It took me about 6 hours to setup a new SAN at one of our small remote sites. It took me 7 months before that because they wanted everything documented, how i am going to do it, what if XXX happens, what if YYY happens, etc. They are paying me, so i don't care anymore. They want to waste a load of time on what if's, they can have it.

This is one reason I left my old job. We moved at such a fast pace, they always wanted to cut corners and shit when it came to security. I got into it a few times with my boss because i wasn't going to be responsible if data got leaked because they didn't want to put in the time to test security, etc (We had children data, SS#, etc, etc)

Hehe, government here too! The client, that is. My company isn't government by any means, but we always go by the term "house rules" so... here we are. I admit before I adjusted I did find it frustrating, but years with them has taught me much and while I am perfectly capable of doing things instantly/on demand (I'm not lazy by any means), I enjoy taking my time because of the gates in place.

Yeah... so 1.5% of US GDP passed through the company I worked at. Security was a joke at this place. They thought that firewalls were enough when our customers had terminal servers were accessible globally.

Do you guys know what Pass-the-hash is?

  8. #288

Yea, but that wasn't even the level i'm talking about. They were giving anyone who asked access to student files (Which has their parents info as well).

Teacher who does PE for 1st to 3rd grade, they need access to all student files 1st-12th

Hall monitor for middle school? Full access to all student files

Security Guard through a 3rd party company, making minimum wage with basic background check? Full access to all student files?

The 3rd one got caught with child porn on the PC he was using (He would bring a USB with videos to watch, he was 3rd shift) Even after this happened, they still didn't feel the need to look at who had access to what. It kinda made me sick.

Was supporting someone, so I grabbed the generic standard issue office chair next to her desk (think of it as a bench of desks) and done my thing.

The owner of the chair I sat on returned not too long after, said "excuse me" in the most unfriendly way possible and I got off her chair, apologised and sat on the other side.

When I did that, she (the owner) proceeded then to walk to the kitchen area, get some wet wipes, came back to her chair, and wiped it.

I was a bit bemused lol... I didn't shit on her chair or anything.

    I feel dirty now

All users have quirks I know, so I don't get annoyed, but this one was a bit beyond where I would draw the line, so it was a bit amusing to see.

We've got one like that.. signs all over her desk saying "don't touch", "wash your hands" and "I'll know".

We had the exact opposite at one of our customers... The keyboard of that particular person was SO filthy that she got a new one about once a year. And her colleagues always kept a spare keyboard around to attach in case someone else had to work on her PC...

I had a similar experience once while doing a favor for a student athlete. His laptop was so filthy that I went to the sports med department and got a pair of latex gloves, hahaha.

I still have that kind of shit burned into my memory. Going to help someone, you sit down at their computer.... and you grab their mouse..... and it has this nice, greasy/slimy feel......

Client was moving office friday and saturday, my job was pretty easy and done quick, but client went cheap with the contractor and had unreasonable time frame, so was putting pression on everyone, and kept asking the cable guy (telecom) but is also responsible to wire the walls for Ethernet cables to change stuff, so the telecom guy didn't had time to test his connections any about 50% of the plugs wern'T working, and we had to 'rewire alot of stuff'

When the plans were made we asked for specific pipes for the CAT6 cables, they made the pipes too small, so they had to revert to Cat5, and has to use Dishes soap to help the cables pass, results? 1 Department has 75% of the PC not wired because the pipes are too small and we can't reopen the walls and the floors. So we have to install different switches in the desks to be able to wire those PCs

Anyone else have issues where other departments make IT decisions and software decisions without consulting the IT department then complain to IT and ask for support after the fact when shit doesn't work and no one in the department can figure it out? That seems to be happening a lot more recently for me.

So we had most of our stuff done this morning and we went to plug some Third Party stuff, that is in another vlans

What did we found? That most numbers that are listed on the (wall plug) is different the the number on the patch panel

So we have to trace most cables to know where we are plugged

This is alas pretty common in my experience. And if they don't burn shitloads of cash on consulting services _before_ they go ask IT why their stupidity isn't working, you're amongst the lucky ones.
And it is _always_ ITs fault.
