2015 MLB Regular Season Thread: Rights of Manfred

Bud Selig is finally a thing of the past. Well, not in the physical sense, as he simply refuses to die. But he is no longer the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Taking over for the octogenarian is Rob Manfred, a guy who worked with the owners during the 1994-95 strike and joined the MLB full-time in 1998. Two years ago he headed the internal investigation of Biogenesis. In short, he might not be the best thing for the MLBPA going forward.

But what will it mean for fans? Only two months into his tenure, he's already caused a stir by casually mentioning a ban on defensive shifts, using pitch clocks in the high minors, and not responding with an immediate "FUCK NO" to Pete Rose's request for reinstatement. In other words, he seems to be willing to try anything to spice up the modern game, even things without any evidence of actually working (shifts don't significantly reduce overall offense) and seemingly contradictory goals (you want faster games but more offense?).

It's way too early to know what kind of commish Manfred will be. At the very least he's not a former team owner playing favorites or someone who will let the All-Star Game end in a tie. But baseball could be due for some seismic changes over the next few years.

As for my predictions last season, they were pretty terrible except for:

As per usual, I make no predictions for where teams will place, only on how the Rays will do, and I can say without hesitation or exception, they are going to suck huge donkey dick. Losing Maddon was a huge blow to the organization. I hold out little faith that they will produce much of anything this year. Every year before now I've had some semblance of faith, but I think their (and my) luck has run out.

At any rate, I'll still be here cheering them on and hoping for miracles. And for the Red Sox to be terrible. I'm really not asking for a lot here, baseball gods.

Meh. Manager of the Year is a pretty basic formula of "who made the playoff and didn't last year." It's like him and Lloyd McClendon basically.

No one likes hating on the Red Sox more than me but their offense is going to be really good. If they get any pitching at all they will be tough to beat in the East.

lol, theyre not making the playoffs, stroman is ded and bautista and encarnacion avoided injury last your so you know theyll be rekt this year, plus they signed guys like martin after a career year, saunders is meh, donaldson also signed after a career year, and their manager is fucking awful. their best pitcher might be the rookie who lives in a van down by the fuckin river

also re: red sox - pablo is going to be fuckin terrible, they will rely on homers and will also lose due to homers because their pitching sucks, but yea they can hit a lot of bombs in the AL east with a few of the new bloods and probable rebounds from bad years from guys like pedroia

Every team has the "when healthy" caveat, don't think the Jays are any more or less vulnerable than most. In fact the only team I give up on is Colorado since their two MVP-caliber players are literally always injured. The Jays may have the best 3-4-5 in baseball with Donaldson, Bautista and Encarnacion. If Reyes and Martin just stay on the field and get on base they will be quite good.

The Red Sox are very good and have depth at every position except catcher. Their staff is suspect but if Giants Even Year Bullshit is real then Red Sox Odd Year Bullshit might be too.

I used to think Hawk was bad, but then I was subjected to the Nationals broadcasting crew. FP Santangelo is the worst broadcaster in any sport I've ever heard.

Oh God, FP is so bad. Losing Ron Darling was bad for the Nats crew.

I am curious as to why people are picking the Angels.

    1. They've lost Howie Kendrick, one of their biggest offensive producers outside of Trout.
    2. Their pitching is, frankly, not very good. Weaver is on the decline, Richards is still not healthy and who knows how long it'll be, CJ Wilson is trash now, so that leaves Shoemaker who's just okay, and relying a ton on someone like Andrew Heaney to cotinue to develop.
    3. Catchers are terrible
    4. Hamilton won't play most likely
    5. Calhoun is almost certainly due for significant regression, and
    6. Pujols is another year older.

I'm not saying last year was completely a fluke, but they've gotten worse, and teams around them have improved. I really do not see how they will even make the playoffs.

Actually it's more that I think Houston and Texas will still stink and Oakland got worse. The Angels didn't do anything great in the off-season but PECOTA says they have the 2nd best TAv in baseball this year so who knows. (But they do expect Hamilton to have a good 400 PA season which is optimistic both for health and performance.)

Anyway Seattle's the team I like in the AL West, hence my prediction.

Reason being is they are the best of a bad bunch. Seattle's response to a shitty offense was overpaying for a guy coming off a career year, Oakland traded every recognizable position player not named Coco Crisp, Texas lost their best pitcher and the rest of the staff is flimsy at best, and Houston is still a year or two away from being respectable. As for the rest of the AL, the only team that really seems improved on paper is Boston, but they are depending on Panda to not get so fat that he can't move and a SS converted to Right fielder to anchor a defense.
