you're fucking kidding me. I was JUST thinking last night "I wish the Metroidvania games would come back."

Can someone up to date with Castlevania stuff explain this to me? As a kid I loved SotN back in the day then went on to play a good few of the handheld Vanias that came out across the years, but as an adult I've not kept in touch. I was under the impression that Castlevania games were still a common and frequent thing though, I guess I'm wrong? Or had they just stopped doing that type of gameplay and done 3D games instead?

I'm a sucker for any game similar to SotN with double jump and pretty art style.

Last true castlevania game true as in not counting Lords of Shadow or spinoffs was Order of Ecclesia on DS in 2008. So its been a pretty long time since we have had a metroidvania style game. If you wanna go even further back we haven't had a true vania game on a console since Symphony of the night... While first Lords of Shadow was good it was more gothic God of war then a castlevania game.

Right after Symphony the big push for 3d hit the game industry. The metroidvania style of game fell out of favor. Companies wanted to avoid 2d at all costs and 3d metroidvania game wouldn't be time/resource possible for many years. Castlevania had some really rocky 3d outings and Metriod even fell off the face of the earth till Prime came out. Industry trend, consumer tastes and companies underestimating their IPs pushed castlevania (and Metriod ) into the niche status the now hold.

order of ecclesia was the last one to come out and that was what, 2008 or so? not counting the PSN/XBL game, which was neat but not exactly a traditional take (and i'm pretty sure rather expensive to actually get the full game, as most of it was released as DLC).

i've never backed a KS before, but i think i might finally give in for this one.

The stretch goal for hardcover art book was met so I'll probably drop 150 for that. I'm a sucker for hardcover books in general and the art for this game looks amazing.

I can't understand this logic, but it wouldn't be happening anyways since IGA pretty much only did the 2D Metroidvania style except for the one 3D whipvania game on PS2

Speaking of stretch goals, up to 1,600,000 now... Blew past those 1mil/1.25mil I mentioned, and well on the way to a Speed Run/Boss Rush mode :D
