i'd prefer the combat system to remain the same, keep it turn based and leave the materia system alone.

if they want to remake other things, there is so much non-essential content they have to work with that i'm sure they'll update something. chocobo raising & racing, gold saucer including battle square, snowboarding, fort condor battles, etc.

FFV, XII, and XIII-3 were the only games I didnt like. I actually stopped playing XII and picked it up two years later, and XIII-3 I havent picked back up yet. So bad.
Also i'm one of those terrible people who like VIII over IX.

Yeah, the general consensus seems to be to keep the game's roots as a turn based rpg + keep the materia system in tact.

Literally just polish the pre existing script with that modern shine, leave in the translation gems, don't water down or cut out any of the already existing goofyness and grit. They can add things to clear up confusing plot points, expand on character stories more, but don't fundamentally change what's already there.

Emphasis on don't fundamentally change the game, gameplay wise or story/script wise.

Nostalgia needs to be treated with a lot of respect to the original, lest the fan boy hell hounds rip SE to shreds (again).
