Sounds to me you're getting a job immediately which is on the track. After you've finalized that shit, forget any other nonsense and get your family an apartment.

And tell your dude to get his shit together.

The whole LA is for movies and SD is for games is BS pure and simple. There are a TON of game companies in the greater LA area.

gamedevmap.com is the best place to look up who is where and it gets updated regularly. LA area: http://gamedevmap.com/index.php?location=Los%20Angeles
167 unique game related companies listed.

    San Diego area: http://gamedevmap.com/index.php?location=San%20Diego
    27 listings.

Also does your husband want to never spend time with his family again? Games are worse than films for crunch periods and work life balance. Just something for him to consider. The game industry is very hard for people with families.

As for the main point of your question to me it seems like you enjoy working with special needs kids, they are in desperate need for special needs teachers, and you make more money. Win win situation. I would go with the higher paying job that would ultimately be more rewarding because you are helping kids who really need someone who cares.

Edit: Historically San Francisco/Bay Area, Seattle, and Los Angeles have been the largest concentrations of game companies in the US.

LA S.E. job sounds much better to me, honestly. private education seems overrated to me anyways. What's more important is instilling your kids a desire to learn more about the world, something that you would have more time for at the LA job. And with the advent of the internet, and the huge amount of cultural thingies like museums in LA you could easily culture both that desire and fulfill that desire for knowledge. Only thing that sucks about LA is the traffic and the smog. but the smog at least has improved from what it used to be, and its likely to continue to do so with the increased usage of electric vehicles and the like.

And yeah, LA is full of gaming companies. (square enix has a branch in LA, hint hint.)

Unless you have the patience of a saint being a special education teacher is going to drive you bat shit insane, did you ever think of why people are in demand for special education? So not only will it potentially make your life miserable, it will also pigeonholed you into that one field for who knows how long.

personally id feel bad accepting the second position after having verbally agreed to do the first, but thats silly.

kinda sounds to me like you think you'd prefer the second one, but that it's going to be an immense workload. I'd honestly go for the special ed; I think you probably have the patience for it, and even if you get stuck doing it for 20 years, as long as your youngest is into their teens by then it'll have been worth it from a family-time perspective, imo.

That's what he wants to do lol.

It's what he was originally trained in, and when he worked on a show for animal planet that is what he did. I don't think he would mind doing straight 3d animation though. The comment about games I made I don't think was clear. He is looking for companies that do staff positions instead of contracts. He has so many friends/co-workers in both games and films. The games people have kept their jobs for years. Everyone we know in films is getting laid off all the time. For those that think my husband isn't good at what he does because he keeps getting laid off, please understand everyone, and I mean everyone, in 3d conversion is going through the same thing.

So he wants to shoot for companies that are more stable. However, in reality now that I am going to have a stable job it may be best he does do the contract thing. But he had to get started in order to get the train rolling. Since he has done conversion so long, people I think don't take him from lack of (or old) experience.

I am still going to do the interview at the sd school today, but I think you guys are right in that I should do the se position. I can (if offered) use this other school as back up in case the la school backs out. Also to seed what they pay.

I know people who have worked for Riot.
They have nice offers, but, people leave. Riot is not a nice company.

Honestly, as someone who worked in the game industry as support, and probably a good 25-30% of my facebook friends are in the industry, you are going to have much better luck going the contract route and bust your ass enough to impress them to keep you on when it's time to move to the next game. Especially since he doesn't have much game industry experience. Few of my friends did 3-4 contract gigs at 1-2 years a pop before they got something stable. But it's also the game industry. Even if you work for one of the biggies (Activision, EA Games, Sony, etc.) they all have lesser studios that they use for games and they can be shut down at a moment's notice. You go into that industry because you love working on games, not because you want stability.

I don't think there are any game companies that are "nice". It is an industry thing. That being said if you really love the industry and that is what you want to do you can definitely find your place and find really great companies to work for.

Ksandra if your husband wants to find a permanent staff position working in the video game industry he should apply to one of the casino gaming companies. That is probably the most stable long term way to work in the video game industry and there is space for technical artists there (that is what I used to do). Bally's, VGT, IGT (or whatever their new name is going to be), Williams etc. would be good places to look.

The SE school turned around and offered me the original English teaching position, with an extra 1k a year. So I took it and cancelled the other interview. They start this Thursday, so there was really no time to interview at the other school and hear back from them.

Wasn't expecting my summer vacation to end so quickly! But that's ok! I got a job! Tomorrow it's Disneyland with the kids and some friends. We are going to stay over at our friends' house who live in Pasadena for two nights so I don't have to commute from SD to LA. During those two days hubby is going apartment hunting like crazy.

Friday is our five year anniversary. This is a great gift I've gotten for it. XD

As to the hubby stuff. I agree he should start doing contract work. Originally, he needed the steady job simply because I didn't have one. Now that I do, it's a lot safer for him to try it since we still will have good income on the months he doesn't work.

Awesome that you get a steady job and get to teach English. At least Pasadena is a pretty decent neighborhood.

BTW, Insomniac Games (Ratchet and Clank/Sunset Overdrive) is nearby in Burbank: http://www.insomniacgames.com/careers/job-openings/

I only know this because someone who loves Ratchet & Clank wanted to try and get a job there years back.
