Hey guys! This is Jan Klose, CEO and Creative Director at Deck13. You may know us from Lords of the Fallen, but we’re back with The Surge, our new action-RPG.

We know we haven’t talked about The Surge much since we announced it earlier this year, but today we’re here to tell you a little more about the world, combat and upgrade system, and talk a little about what inspired it!

So without further ado, here are five things you absolutely need to know about The Surge:

    1. The world is inspired by the worst-case scenario for today’s problems

Earth, in a dystopian future where robotics and mega-corporations work hand-in-hand in an effort to preserve what’s left of Earth’s fragile climate. Quite frankly, the real world is what inspired us most.

I mean, take a look at recent trends in technology, robotics, AI, renewable energies… but also the political, environmental and economic development in the last 30 years. Where will all this end? If it were to end badly… welcome to The Surge.

There’s also an element of philanthropy we’ve touched upon in the story; where corporations fronted by internationally lauded characters claim they’re working for the greater good, but each year encroach more and more into the creepy. Drones to deliver goods, advertisements that seemingly read your mind, where would that all go in a few decades?

    2. Setting the world in a dystopian industrial future allows for awesome combat!

Using a near future scenario, we can pick up a lot of trends from the real world and play with them, and we love that! Working with the fusion of people and technology also lets us do great crazy stuff gameplay-wise.

And it’s so focused: It all comes down to a stronger core mechanic which is the tactical close combat. Cut off limbs, and upgrade yourself with a mix of cybernetics, bone, flesh, and gadgetry. This is a gritty future – it isn’t robots vs humans, it’s cybernetics and man-kind rather inelegantly gnawed, sawed, and nailed together, trying to improve what it is to be human… or, rather, making the human manufacturing machine more efficient.

In The Surge, most of what you see isn’t designed for combat, but when push comes to shove… a shove with hydraulics behind it is going to win.

    3. Slice and dice your way to upgrades

The player’s progression is strongly bound to his most important asset: The Exo Suit he is wearing. This rig allows him to move with more agility and perform stronger moves, but you can also attach armour parts and weapons to it and improve its power level, and manipulate it in a variety of ways.

So instead of having some “fantasy” values that for example boost your hero’s strength all of a sudden without an apparent explanation, you are “really” modifying your character in The Surge, by improving all the technology that’s working in a fusion with the human body.

    4. It’s going to be tough, but you’ll learn quickly and the rewards are worth it!

The game will be difficult, yes. There’s a huge element of risk/reward. You need to analyse your enemies, find their weak spots, and then take a counter measure of your choice to confront them and bring them down. And yes, you are going to die a couple of times in the process.

The difference to Lords of the Fallen is that we take more time introducing the different features for the player at the beginning of the game. Not in a lengthy tutorial, but as you are advance in the game, the features that will help you overcome your enemies will come one by one so that you can grasp the whole toolset of possibilities and not miss on some of them just because they were introduced poorly.

    5. Our experience with PS4 has allowed us to push the boat out

Yes, it’s great to do another game on the platform. We’re using our own engine again, but because the console hardware stays the same and we’re further developing our technology, as well as our experience with the PS4, we can do even greater things this time. We can take what we’ve learnt and then add another layer. That’s very exciting from a developer’s point of view, and it’s rare that you get such a chance. We want to make the best out of it.

    New Details, Gameplay

    Spoiler: show

The Surge features innovative combat mechanics with a unique character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through the tight, visceral combat.

The images released today show The Surge’s hero, equipped with his exoskeleton which serves as a base to upgrade your equipment. When fighting enemies, you can target specific parts or limbs to recover specific pieces of armor, weapons, or equipment you want to attach to your own exoskeleton. Of course, the best parts will often be the hardest to cut off – and they’ll usually be attached to the most dangerous enemies! Even the most common enemies can prove deadly, and the game features imposing bosses who will truly put your wits, guts and reflexes to the test.

Deck 13's new hardcore action-RPG The Surge today unveils a few minutes of unedited gameplay, showing the visceral, uncompromising combat, the limb-cutting system, and a few of the brutal enemies prowling the dysfunctional CREO Complex.

While some of the earlier enemies encountered while exploring the complex – namely, your former fellow workers – have erratic behavior and may be defeated easily if you are not reckless, others are much more "combat-ready", and will hunt you down relentlessly.

Result of unspoken experiments, volatile prototypes built from secret nano-technology, or simply efficient death machines built for maintaining security in high-risk environments, these enemies leave no room for mistakes during combat. The slightest misstep, or moment of hesitation, will certainly mean death for you. However, these enemies wear some of the best equipment, weapons and implants you can claim for your own use. You'll have to decide if you wish to secure a victory, attacking their weak spots, or make your life a bit harder and aim for their armored parts, hoping to recover this precious equipment that will make you stronger, faster, tougher.

Balance the need for better equipment versus your own survival... but remember, you'll definitely need to power yourself up when you inevitably face the world's bosses, that will put your skill to the test!

    May 2017
Upcoming sci-fi action RPG The Surge today reveals 14 minutes of gameplay with commentary from Deck13 Game Designer Adam Hetenyi. Explore the dystopian environments in CREO’s mysterious industrial and RND complex, the Abandoned Laboratories.

Fitted with an industrial exoskeleton, you must fight your way through CREO, equipping the spoils of combat to your suit. Armor and weapons are looted from enemies after duels, in which you will take advantage of The Surge’s unique limb-targeting system to attack and cut off parts of the enemy you want to equip or craft.

Targeting a part of the enemy which is armored will deal less damage, but you will earn the opportunity to deal a finishing blow that will cut off the limb in-tact, allowing you to loot the spoils, gain blueprints, and tech-scrap used to level up your exoskeleton.

The Surge features vertical and horizontal attacks, which are used in combination with parry’s, ducks and jumps as well as a boosted dodge – courtesy of your exoskeleton – culminating in swift, snappy, precise combat situations unlike anything experienced before.

At CREO, you will meet survivors who need help or who can offer assistance. Accepting missions can yield extra rewards, but you will have to balance that against your desire to go deeper into the complex, as the stakes grow ever higher – once dropped, your tech scrap will diminish over time.

Face the dangers of CREO and set your own challenges. Accept missions, learn more about CREO’s history and lore, and fight the various mini-bosses scattered throughout the environment, or play it safe and struggle to survive – it’s up to you.

    May 16th
Deck13's upcoming hardcore Action-RPG The Surge today unveils a new CGI trailer, showcasing intense, visceral combat between man and machine. After exploring Warren's first day at the office in the previous trailer, we now witness him battling mechanical foes deeper within the CREO complex.

Megacorporation CREO works to reverse the devastating effects of climate change, but the facility is hit by a mysterious, catastrophic event. After awakening from a blackout caused by this disaster, Warren is thrust into a deadly new world. Robots gone haywire, insane augmented co-workers and rogue AI - it seems like everything wants him dead.

Players are pitted in a desperate fight to survive, engaging these unpredictable foes in tight, visceral melee combat. Grow in power with The Surge's next-gen looting system - target and slice specific limbs off your enemies in battle, then equip the weapons or armor you dismember!

    The Surge comes May 16.

The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented DLC - October 2, 2018
Hardcore Action RPG The Surge will soon be getting brand new content with a new expansion as The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented is coming this October 2 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Watch today’s Teaser Trailer to get a first glimpse of The Surge’s wild, wild West!

Enter the bowels of the CREO facility and explore an old and abandoned Quality Assurance lab created to push CREO’s tech to the limit. Warren will face Dr. Rischboter’s deadly test chambers that, for some reason, feel like torn straight out of a twisted Wild West TV show!

Fight through the mad doctor’s training rooms and try modifying them yourself for increased rewards by combining up to 4 of the 16 insane modifiers available. At the end of each stage, fight against distinct Challengers, powerful opponents forged from the training scenarios who are equipped with 30 unique new equipment pieces – armors, weapons, and implants - that you can take for yourself!

Mosey on over to Dr. Rischboter’s labs on October 2, when ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented’ comes out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
