So even though my vm windows 7 is pirated I was able to install windows 10 and activated it.
I wonder if I should do the same on my real machine
Trying to upgrade our laptop (guinea pig) from Win 7 to 10 but I get stuck on an infinite "working on it" when preparing to install (supposed to take 10 seconds or so) Any ideas on the hang up? For the record, I've walked away and come back hours later with no change.
EDIT:
got it working, not sure if it just kicked in after restarting the app a few times or what.
anyone having issues with voice activated cortana? when i type in requests with it it's fine, but when i voice activate and ask it for the same thing it says it can't connect to the internet.
Only issue I had was a suite of useless Intel BS (Management/Rapid Tech/etc) being installed out of the blue. Not in Windows Update history so no idea where it came from. Was a little annoyed to come across it manually and makes me wonder what else is hiding.
Other than that, only thing I can even think of not working flawlessly was my G930 volume rocker not working when I close the Logitech software (and it def did on 7).
I disabled Cortana all together. I don't care to talk to my pc. ^^
But it is working just fine now. Now that I got most of my stuff reinstalled, no problems what so ever.
So right now I have Windows home. With those keys I can upgrade to Windows pro. Is there any benefit to doing that?
apparently i just needed to restart my pc after doing my first sign-in to my MS account.
cortana is fucking awesome. this whole thing is awesome, actually
Any QoL options to enable?
not quality of life per se, but my checklist thus far:
Disable WiFi Sense
Disable Onedrive (gpedit.msc)
Disable Automatic Reboot from wsus/windowsupdate
Disable the "p2p"-windowsupdate function
Depending on what platform you came from (it was like this in previous versions as well, but in 7 and before you had the functionality in the start menu):
If you pin applications to the taskbar, rightclicking them pulls up a list of last used documents in that software (for most software).
About the "license bundled to hardware" thingie, at least here in Europe this only applies to pre-installed OEM versions of Win7/8 where you don't have a full set of license + media at hand. So OEM 8(.1) with license key stored in BIOS is bundled to the hardware and would be a ToS break if you grab the license and install it on another PC.
System builder and stand-alone-bought Win-versions are completely free to get moved to other hardware as long as you don't install it more times than the license allows.
For now I'll still wait with the upgrade, it's not like Win10 offers anything that makes me go "WANT!"
I found this handy: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6...dows-10-a.html
I don't think anyone wants to see direct links to their C:User folders.
Anyway to bring control panel like before?
Win + X menu?
I upgraded. Lol'd at the fact that I pretty much unchecked everything during set up. MS tries to slick you over and pretty much monitor everything you do(with permission at least).
Everything is working except FFXIV launcher being black with no content. Win10 fixed a few issues I was having before. Have to troubleshoot FFXIV later.
There are two "control panels" now and no, they aren't interchangable as not all settings are available in either of them. Some even open the other panel. Left-click on Windows button and choose settings for the new one, right-click and select control panel for the old one.
Also Windows 10 collects tons of your personal data, especially if you selected express installation. Here's a good guide how to disable all of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/c...ogging_in_w10/
I meant the settings menu, I gues i could use CTRL+X then
So still wondering to upgrade with my pirate version or not
I'm not gonna explain, but anyone who was able to pirate Windows 8 successfully can pirate Windows 10 right now.
I just bought a Windows 8 license earlier in the year for 20 bucks and used it instead.
