that was like 95% elon musk's awkwardness and ego causign the discomfort, not really on stephen.

I'd say every interview so far -- except for Biden -- had a decent amount of awkwardness introduced by Colbert instead of him getting out of the way to let the guest talk a bit and answer some questions. That's a small part of what made the Biden segment so great, Colbert just got the heck out of the way. And before anyone jumps on me I know I sound overly critical. I'm not upset or anything, it's just part of my job to pick at the minutiae on things like this. Still love the show so far.

I buy that. Even with Clooney and ScarJo, it felt like Stephen was really pressing hard to talk as opposed to letting the discussions just happen. With Elon Musk, given how naturally awkward he is Stephen kind of had to be that way to make it progress. But with the actors and entertainers, you don't have to force it that much.

New show, new network, lots of pressure, I'm sure he'll find his groove eventually

The band is still really awkward. The music is great, I think it fits really well. But they're still not really finding their grove as far as interacting with Stephen goes. I feel like it was the same thing with Fallon and The Roots. Now it's an incredible chemistry, but when he first started at Late Night they didn't know how to make it work at first

Whenever Jon decides to speak it's just "Yyyyeeeeaa haha" and it gets annoying. But I never really watched late night with bands before this so I have no idea what the band is supposed to do other than play music during commercials.

That's pmuch what they do, any additional interaction is optional. Leno never pushed it much, Letterman and Conan had them front and center.
A shows host band also occasionally supports musical guests that need it, like, most rock acts don't, but a solo artist might need them if they aren't carting around a tour band in town at that moment.
