Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters (May 31, 2019)

Just saw it in Imax. All the monster bits of the movie were amazing. Rest of it was meh. Thankfully there's a lot of monster bits. Still could've used less humans and it was really annoying how they kept cutting to the humans during the final battle. Like just focus on the goddamn monsters.

It was awesome to get to see my own city get fucked up in a Godzilla melee :D

Also poor Mothra, always destined to be rekt. At least she went out like a boss

Saw it last night I had a blast, but I can agree it needed like 10% more monsters and 10% less humans.

I think they gave each of the classic kaiju great respect and adapted them well, especially Mothera. She's always been one of my favorites since I was young and I did geek out a bit when her theme started playing and she appeared.

Sadly the movie is doing terribly at the box office.

At least Godzilla vs Kong is already filmed in case they both flop and they scrap this universe...

It's made its budget back between US and Global box office but unless GvK is an enormous success I see that being the last one.

i mean, as far as why Kong didn't show up in the movie in response? He's on an island surrounded by water and even if he did feel like swimming through the ocean, the movie didn't give enough time. The only ones that even showed up at all were the ones based in the Americas. Didn't think we needed an explanation on that.

My headcanon was that Kong himself is an alpha and this is why him and Godzilla are gonna fight in the next one.

Kong is for sure an alpha. I wouldn't bet against Kong coming out on top, and therefore becoming King Kong.

More likely though, assuming this isn't the last entry in the series, Godzilla and Kong team up to take on Gigan (artwork for Gigan was included in King of the Monsters). If the franchise continues I would guess we'll get Mechagodzilla next, and then a return of Ghidorah for Destroy All Monsters.

Ugh Ghidorah was so amazing in this movie, I want more of him fighting other monsters.

Gigan might have been a little too weird to have in so soon, since it's also an alien thing and part robot to boot- not that they couldn't change that.
Checking that poster, it looks like Gamera was also in it, though he's his own separate movie rights I think, so they went with original turtle monster probably for that reason and because they didn't want to overload the movie with other big names.
Spider dude's who's name I don't remember is right above him too.

I just hope it gets 2*budget, and Kong v Godzilla v The Antichrist make a killing @ the box office to keep the mverse alive.

I'm more looking forward to seeing what Japan does with the Shin Godzilla sequel because that was really good and also really fucked up, which I suppose was a given since it was directed by Evangelion director.

I actually have a lot of optimism that will catch on in Japan and we'll keep getting Godzilla movies even if Kong is the last one here.

Shared universe is pretty much exactly how Toho Godzilla has operated from the near beginning. Mothra, Rodan, Gamera, they've all had their own movies and there is some continuity between them, it's just played pretty loose.
