The most recent episode has enough of a recap to fill you in on those series.
Should watch Frontier though (at least the two movies), it was great.

I think you'd understand Delta fine given your background with the series. There will be little things that would make more sense, but the series overall explains most of what's going on. It introduces a few new species of humanoids other than the familiar Zentradi/Meltradi. 7 did explain more about the protoculture, but was so dreadful to watch I can't recommend it. There are a few ties to Frontier but I think you could understand without seeing it.
Some basic things to understand:
- Humans have taken to space with colony fleets consisting of an island ship complete with city, multiple escort ships, and an SDF class ship.
- Singing is more powerful than we can possibly imagine.
- There will be references to bands/singers from basically every Macross series in existence. Every Macross series focuses heavily on the music.
- The food shop from the original Macross is in nearly every series.
- 7 is garbage and took about 30 episodes to finally start to not suck.
- To the best of my knowledge, only a few characters have reappeared in the different shows as well as their children/grandchildren.
I recommend Macross Zero if you haven't seen it already, it's almost on par with Macross Plus (which is by far my favorite). One episode of Frontier revolves around recreating some of this series, if you watch Frontier watch this first.
Last episode makes watching Frontier more relevant.
Damn they literally touched on everything except Zero. That was a really awesome episode, and the way they presented the flashback was so well thought out and fit perfectly into the context of the current show.
So we're done here?
