For many of them, their hair is hard to maintain, and you are basically saying they should be forced to spend a ton of money to maintain it. Studies have shown that it's hard to get a job with natural black hair:

    http://www.teenvogue.com/story/black...discrimination

So yes they encouraged to straighten their hair to look more like white people hair. Natural black hair for some types are going to want to dread, and they can spend forever trying to comb it all out. And some go get braided for the look, and they don't have to deal with the constant maintenance otherwise. Braiding btw, is often a whole day affair.

If it took me forever to comb my hair every single morning, you bet I would want an alternative.

I would strongly recommend reading through some experiences. Here's one:

    http://thoughtcatalog.com/kovie-biak...r-told-anyone/

    Read this one for example:

Two fucking hours everyday to straighten their hair. I can do that shit (wash, blow-dry, straighten) in about 40 min. And I don't have to do it every day. Only when I feel like it. You claim they should have to.
    I'll go through those now.

    Side note:
...you are basically saying they should be forced to spend a ton of money to maintain it.
You claim they should have to.
Can we do each other a favor and take the words on screen for what they are instead of attempting to read between the lines and put words in each others mouths? I said neither of those things. I asked questions in the mindset of understanding and you jumped to a conclusion without further clarification.

What I said was that they have the CHOICE to decide what they want to do with their hair. That choice will have different benefits or consequences that they will individually have to decide if it's worth it or not.

But the problem is that many low cost choices (natural or dreads) means less likely to get a job. And some high cost choices (braiding) means less likely to get a job. The only fail safe one (straightening) takes two hours every morning to maintain. So it's really a "fake choice." You want a job: You straighten your hair to look more like what white people define as nice professional hair. And that is racism.

Listen, I think you are well meaning, but ill-informed. And don't get me wrong, I only learned about this stuff maybe 4-5 years ago. So before that I was severely ill-informed, too.

Understand that what you are saying smells Jim Crowish. I know you don't mean to, but it does. Saying, "Oh well then black people just don't work there," is a huge problem. And I am not saying that to attack you, but educate you.

Just work harder and get jobs that don't require hair or dress codes god.

I'm pretty sure there is now official NASA / AAS documentation of me wearing a death metal themed Taylor Swift shirt with most of my tattoos showing while teaching children about SN 1987A.

Why did nobody respond to this? This was great. That girl trying to model the sticks in her hair as they fall out killed me.

My coworker, a 28 year old black woman, just pulls her hair up and back and uses a band to keep it up.

Our payroll administrator has short braids like you'd get in Jamaica, but not cornrows. They hang off the sides as well as the back.

Our purchasing manager straightens her hair I think.

Almost like it's not impossible for women to have short hair. And yes I dated one while in the Navy she kept it short. Shorter than really necessary or that looked good but meh

This is the best answer. No one likes a dress code even if it's what they normally do. I'm still trying to convince the boss shorts would be a good idea when we out in 100+ sun... but he's still convinced they can't look professional despite being a part of the uniform several nationwide employers of people working outside

    Also that's pretty awesome.

I completely understand a "you get what you pay for" mentality. Low cost options are not likely going to measure up against more expensive options. I don't really have a solution to the problem.

This raises my skeptical side a bit. It comes across as a "I've seen the light because I was told how things are". With how things are being done in Universities, Colleges, and other schools now-a-days, I have a hard time believing some of the ideas being taught in them. That's on me though. I'll deal with that in my own time.

I'm unfamiliar with American history. Please keep that in mind. I was about to answer asking who Jim Crow was. Luckily my brain flagged it and I did a google search first.

I don't think there's anyway anyone wins here. There appears to be a considerable effort to split the populous against each other and it's not going to help anyone in the long run besides the people in power. That could just be my tinfoil yamaka though.

There is a difference between women having the choice to have short hair, and women being socially pushed into having short hair to get a job.

Military have a safety reason for that. Let's not be obtuse here. Trying to compare style requirements of the military to say a receptionist is just so dumb.

personally im against dreads being banned at work period (regardless of who wears them or how utterly horror inducing they are for me to gaze upon) simply because not everyone has the same hair type.

that said, cultural appropration? lol ksandra, do you really have issues with this? culture exists because people "appropriate" other cultures and change them. culture is a living, breathing beast, and every culture is a build up of previous cultures. when you try and stop this "appropriation", culture dies, and all meaning behind that culture is lost.

They don't have to get your peepee hard for them to not be gross. But I guess we're learning all about Zet's terrible tastes lately.

    Correct.

Also ITT: People acting like people who want dreads are the only ones who have to sacrifice their chosen style for a job.
