Yeah they seem to have made the game real time proportions if that makes sense. X and Y were close but characters still looked a bit chibi-ized. This looks like always normal size characters and the world looks gorgeous! I really love the Hawaiian vibe too.

Rowlet is definitely my choice. Im sure the gf will go with litten seeing as she has a black cat.

Eh... I'm kinda over flying legendaries. Think I'd prefer something like ice/dark, even though it picks up more weaknesses that way.

ATM I'm leaning towards Litten. The paw-licking is too adorable. Also I don't really think competitive thinking should factor into your choice for in-game. Their IVs will almost certainly be garbage anyway so just pick whatever you want to.

I'm very curious what they're going to do with the 100% Zygarde and Ash-Greninja though. They've been appearing in side games so it seems unlikely they won't factor into this new game somehow.

Why is it refered to as ash-greninja instead of just greninja?

When people say Ash-Greninja they're referring specifically to the special one Ash Ketchum has in the anime. It's appeared in a ton of the side games and it's gotten some marketing, so it'd be pretty weird if it didn't show up in the main games in some form, given Pokemon's relationship with shameless marketing.

I'm kind of curious if we won't see an NX port.

I was just brainstorming ideas for the evolution names in my car this morning wondering about which of the starters would be added to Smash 5. I didn't see any of them really jump out, but we have not seen the evolutions yet.

Anyways:

Litten (Lit + Kitten)
Tinger (Tinder + Tiger)
Bonferal (Bonfire + Feral Cat)

I didn't try for the other starters yet.
