Weird hard drive slot in laptop (pic attached)

I was replacing my dying HD with SSD but as this is now another question/issue and it's a laptop for the 2 that tracked my adventures, I've created a new thread rather than spam that PC build thread with laptop things. The SSD replacement was successful. In the picture below, HDD0 is the slot the HD was in that I replaced with SSD. This is fine.

HDD1 I'm confused about. The connectors, rather than being horizontal, is vertical (I expected it to look like HDD0. And I presume it's covered up with something, although I didn't try very hard to pull it (it seemed firm). Does that mean I need those short ribbon like cables to connect it to my hard drive? I'm confused why it isn't the same as HDD0. It also didn't come with a caddy/holder so I'll need to dig one up anyway (HDD0 was already in a caddy)

    Spoiler for huge:

    Spoiler: show

It's unlikely I'll use it. But if I can then I can fit a 2TB drive for more media goodness. Otherwise, it's 6 years old, so excuse the dust.

    It's not a ribbon, it's a solid adapter:

Search for like, "HP SATA adapter" or some such thing.

    Ahh oh right, thanks!

Any possible reason why it's not like HDD0's? I was wondering why it was different

No idea. Haven't seen many laptops with spaces for more than one drive (other than multibays), much less ones that mix connectors. My guess would be that it's a modular/optional part, and that's the configuration that fit into the layout.

Well, one obvious reason would be that for a "normal" slot you need some extra space so the drive can be placed in the bay and then pushed into the connector. With this top-down connector you can save that space. And since the drive is then pretty much fixed in the bay you don't need screws to secure it.

I see I see. Makes sense.

Lets see how the machine fares later on or what I decide to do with it, but yeh I'll fit a 2TB 2.5 in there otherwise for extra storages. Thanks!
