That's exactly why I'm going with Ryzen when for the next build. Also, I'm currently only using a 4690K at 4.3 on stock voltage with a Corsair H80GTi and I think it may be slightly dipping with some newer games like Wildlands and/or even when having multiple tabs open and watching a video, movie, or a stream. I figure since the cost of going 6c/12t is the same if not cheaper than the Intel 4c/4t Kaby Lake 7600K I may as well give it a shot.

Regarding GPU, I kinda have to stick with Nvidia because on the scale of what matters more between new games and GPU computing, my money really needs to be focused more towards the computing end. I don't know how AMD is in that respect, specifically, but I use CUDA so lol.
Ah gotcha. I'm not savvy with computing stuff but yes I've read people talk about how important CUDA is. That 1050 TI is a strong card for the money though!

Like I said before, I have constant access to CPU and GPU clusters currently via ssh so it's not the biggest deal, but free cluster time is a luxury that doesn't last forever so I want to be somewhat insulated against the the future.

Anyway, got /some/ info from GFs old text messages.

    Gigabyte brand motherboard (??)
    16gb ram, unknown whether DDR3 or DDR4
AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8 core 4.0GHz Socket AM3+ 125W for the chip

It's DDR3. Not really a bad combo and it could easily sell for around $200 to support a new setup.

Between the option of stripping old build and bringing it up to date or dual-booting the AMD tower with smaller upgrades to it it seems that the former is the best option? I'm also most likely going to salvage any old parts I can and build GF a cheap computer because she is also works in applied math and runs codes nonstop but she is bad and does everything on a macbook and it triggers me.

You'll need a new mobo regardless of the build, so pick which case you'd rather main and start from there.

Since you're on a budget, if go the amd route. Idk about cuda and all that, but with your budget it's not like you're getting the cutting edge tech that's out right now so I think it's a non issue for you considering the options in your price range. If you go with Intel, find a mobo/cpu to save a few bucks on something from a generation or two ago, imo. Ram is always around $100 regardless, and another 130 for the card means you have around 270-370ish to play around with, which is fine.

CUDA is just a language developed by Nvidia that allows you to interface to the cores on their GPU cards and run tasks on them. It is built such that it only works on Nvidia cards and is the most ubiquitous / powerful of such toolboxes that currently exist. It just prohibits me using any other GPU besides theirs.

Can probably do w/e with the processor and mobo though.

Ah well that's a non problem. Their cards are an amazing value right now anyways, no reason not to get one.

Co-worker looking to build a 2-monitor 1080p setup for flight sims on a 1100-1200 budget with shipping. He also does very little FPS. He's not afraid of ryzen which I'm not familiar with so if we went there I could use some help.

He is a little afraid of doing 1440p or a 1080 ultrawide due to desk space and was originally thinking 23-25" but may be able to fit to slightly larger. I was thinking 27ish but he was thinking 25.

Anyone got some thoughts? He's familiar with PC building but was gonna buy a pre-built before I suggested checking pcpartpicker.

If he's only running 1080p that's definitely doable on that budget.

Yeah I put something very similar together already for him - started looking at recently completed builds and am finding some goodies.

Ohhhh I'm not but good call, he is 40 min from one and will absolutely go there. Problem is he isn't as familiar so he's gonna have to call me while there and ask "do I want this" for several parts lol.

Below is what I got based off of prices today. Things to note: cpu/mb are before tax. Motherboard found here is available open box which should still qualify for the $50 off for the combo. I've bought countless open box products and still received the discount. I'm a huge fan of Asrock and really like their BIOS. Monitors are IPS which to me is important if going for 1080p. This is without case or Windows. Windows 10 I'm pretty sure can still be had for free. Obviously some things can be switched like going for a single larger SSD or waiting for a sale because $84 for a 240gb SSD is crazy. Also can save $120 if only wanting a 1060 6GB. Earlier today there was a Gigabyte GTX 1080 for only $390 so prices are dropping when a deal pops.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($199.99)
    Motherboard: ASRock - Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming K4 ATX AM4 Motherboard ($33.96)
    Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($103.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital - Blue 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($83.99 @ SuperBiiz)
    Storage: Toshiba - P300 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($65.53 @ Amazon)
Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GAMING Video Card ($366.89 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: SeaSonic - EVO Edition 850W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($89.99 @ SuperBiiz)
    Monitor: Acer - H236HLbid 23.0" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor ($109.99 @ Newegg)
    Monitor: Acer - H236HLbid 23.0" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor ($109.99 @ Newegg)
