Hot damn. I noticed I said 3700X when I was talking about my upgrade, then I realized that was wrong because I bought a 3600X which was $100 cheaper.

But then I remembered I replaced the Ryzen 5 sticker on my case with a Ryzen 7 sticker...

Check CPU-Z and it's identifying the chip as a 3700X. Go dig up the box, yep, the serial sticker says 3700X. Receipt says 3600X even though it includes the serial for a 3700X on it. Just got a $100 upgrade for free. Someone either screwed up when bundling my order or did me a huge favor.

I'm going with screwed up the bundle. When I bought my 2700X a few weeks back they sent me to the front with a slip for a 3600. Honest mistakes really, but big grats on the big free upgrade!!

Going to have to see if I stay error free overnight but the new BIOS and 3700x have my RAM running 3600c16 without an error on memtest.

The base clock was 3600c19 and I was on 3200c14 before on Ryzen 2600.

So the new RAM timing is stable.

Installed the new Vega 56 from Kalmaldo. Undervolting was an... experience. AMD recently changed their drivers last month to Adrenalin 2020 which integrated GPU tuning into the tuning settings rather than having it on Wattman. In doing so they changed some of the functionality. Rather than getting to set a fan RPM I had to play with PWM percentages. Also it removed the ability to lock the card into state 6 for testing.

However I eventually managed to get the card clocked to a p6 1582Mhz/1025mV and p7 1650Mhz/1060mV on +50% Power Limit. That's a mild max overclock boost with a pretty substantial undervolt. Bumped the memory up to 920MHz compared to 800 base. Temps maxing at 69C for the core and 72C for the memory with the fan at 3200 RPM which is not noticeable with my headphones playing music.

Using Firestrike for testing stability on the GPU so I can report that the CPU, RAM, and GPU upgrades/overclocks have boosted me about 3k in bench score from 16500 to 19995. Real world metric, my FPS is up about 40~ from 125 max to 165 in Overwatch (1080p ultra). After selling off my 2600 and hopefully my 980Ti the cost of the upgrades will be about $100 total (thx Microcenter error on the 3700x instead of 3600x)

My time using Adrenaline was short lived, but in that time it wasn't the most pleasant. I've championed AMD video cards for a long time now because they are (and still are) the price to performance kings. During the 7000 series thru Vega I never experienced driver issues other than random stuff which I've had happen with Nvidia cards too because it's random. AMD is still moving forward instead of backward because of Ryzen and the 5700(XT) gives stupid performance for the cost, but, the 5700 series and these Adrenaline drivers DO NOT get along and I wasn't interested in seeing if it would be random for me this time around. I do hope that AMD can figure out a way to get into the upper crust of the GPU market. Competition is good and right now Nvidia's prices are so bad.

Gred, if you have the time and would like to do this, try to seek out some benchmarks of current games and compare them to anything you have. I never went for an overclock with that card. As we discussed I used undervolting for lowering the fan. I'm very curious with your OC how it is vs the new crop of AMD cards and of course Nvidia's equivalent.

I hardly play AAA except years after when they go on deep discount, and only inbetween Dota sessions really. The most modern games I have are Witcher 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Assassin's Creed Syndicate if you are interested in those

All of this is 1080p (monitor is Alienware 25 240Hz with FreeSync on)

Card was hovering around 1400 clock the entire time which is p3/p4 for me. 2200 RPM on the fan.

I checked out some benchmarks for the 3700X but most are coupled with a 2080 or TI. Tomb Raider seemed to be if I had to guess 20% more FPS roughly but duh when comparing Vega anything to a 2080 or TI. I'd still think that's pretty great.

Yeah I mean I don't need AAA titles in 165FPS. If I was serious about those games I'd probably go to a 1440p IPS that is capped at 60Hz anyway.

Wife has had her role expand into video editing (Adobe Premier Pro) and is in the market for a new computer. We have existing monitors, keyboards, etc.; can also salvage PSU from a previous build. Budget is about $1k. What's good these days? AMD CPUs seem pretty good?

Edit: We have a Microcenter near us that is still open where we plan on getting most of our parts.

Ryzen 2 with fast ram is pretty neat nowadays, easy on the budget too which let's you beef up other parts or go for even high quality ram. You'll probably need a new mobo for that, and together all 3 of those things is probably half your budget.

Idk what kind of video card she needs, but that wont break $300 likely, and assuming that salvaged PSU still works then that leaves you $200ish to expand with the better SSDs available now like m2 and all that jazz.

Found something online, but I don;t know much about video editing. I'd recommend taking advantage of open box GPUs and/or mobo from your local MC.

For $1k you can go a long way.

    I'd strongly recommend a 3700x or 3900x ryzen.

You can get a motherboard+cpu+ram+GPU from microcenter way under $1k.

Get a b450 motherboard to save some cash, the msi tomahawk b450 max comes w/ pre updated bios for 3rd gen cpu support - it has a small price premium on it because of how popular is it for this purpose though.
    Any DDR4 that's > 3200mhz is fine.

GPU is where it gets interesting. The 5700 and 5700 xt are insane for encoding but there have been some teething issues with drivers although they've mostly affected gaming on certain titles, I havn't seen much in the way of video editing feedback on them.

My recent build was mostly from MC and this is basically the way I went, but with a 3600X and a 1070 TI FTW from EVGA's B Stock. I don;t do editing though, but if you give me an idea of what benches to run to give you an estimate I could probably do that.

According to https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/ar...X-series-1535/, a 2700X will outperform a 3600 in this particular application. The question then, is whether the 3700X worth the $100 premium in y'all's opinion?

Well in that case I might as well get the 3800X, it's only $30 more!

Editing in what I have so far, comments/suggestions appreciated.

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Matisse 3.9GHz 8-Core AM4 Boxed Processor with Wraith Prism Cooler ($299)
MSI B450 TOMAHAWK AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard ($94.99)
    Samsung 860 QVO 1TB SSD 4-bit QLC V-NAND SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive ($109.99)
EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Super SC Ultra Overclocked Dual-Fan 6GB GDDR6 PCIe 3.0 Video Card ($244.99)
    G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit F4-3200C16D-32G - Black ($134.99)

Tax $73.01, total $957.96, minus $20 for the CPU/GPU pair bonus which isn't showing up in cart. Storage is a bit low but we can reuse the disks from the old computer also.
