Bleh, what I was afraid of. It's not that I need a new computer, bit some games that have come out or will be coming out has my interest and wanting something that will handle 4k. So looks like I might be better off holding back till next year.

Same, I was hoping to eventually migrate to a 4K monitor and wanted a 3090 as the first step of my upgrades. Gonna be a slow run

I got a deal on some of my parts from someone that started a build and decided not to go full custom loop but it was still expensive. I probably should have just built a rig that could handle a few more gpus for mining.

Someone else mentioned laptops, I am absolutely loving mine with a 3070. Since I've been waiting for a 3080 for my PC I'm powering a 3440x1440 100hz ultrawide with a gtx1080 and this laptop is actually more powerful than that build lol.

I wanted to do a partial rebuild this spring but I guess it's not going to happen now. I've managed to save a little money at a time for almost a year now but just the cpu would wipe out over half of it.

Laptop is in, gonna benchmark it shortly. I am flabbergasted at how thin it is. Maybe an inch to inch and a quarter thick at its thickest point. Almost twice as thin as my A51m.

It is wild how thin the higher power stuff is this year. The thin and light max-q Acer I had been using the last 2 years is maybe only like 1/4 thinner then the Strix Scar despite the large difference in power/TDPs

M17 R4. Had the most powerful specs and is the only laptop im aware of that you can have a mechanical keyboard on this Gen. Still debloating windows and setting up apps but once it's all done I'll run some 3dmark.

Strix Scar has a mechanical keyboard this gen, not sure about other brands for this year specifically

Yeah there's a few mechanicals but I still usually opt for a Bluetooth keychron or something if I'm stationary a while.

5EAlright done tweaking for now, still room to grow but I'm too tired.

Scored 12755 in Time Spy: https://www.3dmark.com/spy/19714466

13000 is feasible but again, will do more another time. Temperatures are outstanding. The cooler on this thing is unreal for how ridiculously thin this thing is.

CPU max temp after Cinebench R23 and 30m of Prime 95: 74C

GPU max temp after looping maxed out Unigine Heaven for 15m and running all of the 3DMark benches: 66C

Runs cooler than my desktop half the time... granted, the 3090 produces as much wattage of heat as this entire laptop so not a very fair thing to try to compare. I am thoroughly impressed with Alienware's engineers on this one, much much MUCH better than my A51m. Keyboard is a dream to type on, and with an ICC generated by a spyder calibrator the screen is beautiful for an IPS, not even any noticeable bleed or glow. Most of these gsync laptop displays have had bad glow for me, but I got lucky this time.

Nice scores. Gonna stick with the Zephyrus G15 3070 as it's scoring over 11k in both overall and graphics timespy. All these 3k series laptops are a blast and are serious business, you really can't go wrong. Also sub 1" and 4lbs or less you can say it's for work or school when it's not at all lmao.

Have seen some scores floating that approach 14k so gonna try to get as close to that as possible once I'm not getting cut open. Very happy with this thing though that's for sure. Laptops are coming such a crazy way that I feel desktops will be obselete in a few generations.

Price on high end models is always gonna limit that on top of the crowd just absolutely desperate for maxing out settings and resolution at the same time.

For consumers not needing top end performance there hasn't been a reason to own a desktop for like a decade now.

    finally dipping my toes into crypto mining, was for curious;

upgrading to a 3080 or posssiblllyy 3090 & was thinking of keeping the current 1080ti on the same mobo and running both to mine (when not using the 30-- to game). only concern is that finna fry them given the proximity and enclosed case? or does one just have to ensure proper cooling and it'll be copacetic.

Gonna be rough air cooling two power hungry cards like that but worst thatll happen is you'll get lower hash rates as the cards start to throttle as long as you do thermal pad swaps on the 30xx.

Liquid cooling is worth it as long as you don't mind how finicky it is to set up and maintain.

Done tweaking laptop again for now. This is gonna be my 24/7 profile, not looking to break records. Broke 13k which was a personal goal for this configuration.

    System Specs:
    Alienware M17 R4
    360hz IPS Display
Cherry MX Low Profile Mechanical Keyboard
    Intel i7 10870H
    32GB 2933MHz RAM
    nVidia RTX 3080 150+15w
    2x 1TB SK Hynix SSDs in RAID0
    1x 2TB Samsung 970EVO
    Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU
    Phobya Nanogrease on GPU
Fujipoly Extreme pads on all other components

    Benchmarks:
    Cinebench R20: 4202
    (https://i.imgur.com/6PauWDC.png)

    Cinebench R23: 10870 (spooky)

    TimeSpy: 13131 (14010 GPU, 9688 CPU)

    Max CPU Temp: 73C (package)
    Max GPU Temp: 60C
    (https://imgur.com/OozDaW3)

Each bench was run at least 3 times, no reboots in between. Temperatures were recorded after the high scores in the same way, 1 loop of R23 though because I don't have all day. Gaming temperatures should be similar +/- a couple C.

    CPU Settings:
    SpeedStep On
    SpeedShift On
    HyperThreading On
    TCC Offset 0
    TPL Off
    VMax On
    Thermal Velocity Boost Off
    Cache Min 39
    Cache Max 42
    Core Offset -135mV
    Cache Offset -135mV

    GPU Settings:
No custom power curve (found it to perform worse)
    Core clock +180MHz
    Memory clock +1200MHz

Overall very pleased with this performance. Silicon lottery was finally nice to me. If I need more juice I have my 5950x + 3090 machine in the other room that I can Steam Link to, but the purpose of this laptop is to provide a mobile gaming and general entertainment platform to stop me from getting too depressed in the hospital and when I'm bedridden so in that capacity it serves perfectly just like its older, chunkier, more temperamental brother did, though this one is much much much more mobile, and noticeably quieter as well which is great when it's right next to your bed.

    Bonus DLC: Size comparisons

    Spoiler: show

That is the most ridiculous gaming laptop I have ever heard of. O_O
