yrrrr the raw performance boost is lookin like 15%ish and doesn't even match the 4090 unlike the 4080 smoking the 3090 (and 3090Ti). p disappointing for a two+ year wait tbh. that said lot of reviewers are gushing about multi frame gen tho mmv re latency depending on the title. guess Nvidia dumped all their R&D into software this cycle.

I'm still sporting a 3080ti, so may just go the motherboard/ram/cpu/case (case is due to my cats) upgrade now, and wait for either a 5080 super or 6x series for my next gpu.

I don't know what anyone expected. They are on the same chip process. They just managed to cram some more cores on and up the wattage.

If you already have a 4000 series there's basically zero reason to upgrade given you're getting every DLSS upgrade aside from the Multi FG.

Whatever gains you're getting just aren't worth the investment unless your primary concern is showing everyone how much money you have to waste.

    I have VRAM FOMO though!!

Not really. Kinda. The one I have should be enough. I have seriously thought about trying to find a 4070 ti super but then the higher part of my brain kicks in and calls me an idiot.

Microcenters have started to post their numbers on doorfronts:

    5090: 4-5 units
    5080: 60-85 units

Safe to say, those lines are thinning out.

Looks like Nvidia snuck in their own version of AFMF (frame gen in every game) with the driver update for 50 series, but it's only available on the new cards.

Went with a 4080 in the end, should arrive around the same time as the rest. However, I didn't check the merchant and now it's being shipped by an Amazon partner in Spain even though ones in Germany still had them in stock, but whatever.

Edit: Nevermind, new business account must have had a typo in the account no. somewhere, payment failed. Tried to check the account no. via the order screen, just used it again without any kind of confirmation prompt. 30 seconds later, Amazon locked my business account. Considered it a sign and wanted to order the 4070 via my trusted B2B store, but they had restocked two 4080s since yesterday, exact model I wanted even. Ordered there and told Amazon to delete all my data while providing the bare minimum they asked for, not dealing with this kind of inconvenience, closed my previous account because I don't want to deal with Amazon anyway.

Can't skip the generation if there are no cards to skip over?

Any idea how bad an idea it could be to plug this one in?

    Spoiler: show

Noticed by accident as I was plugging the GPU in. Bottom right connector is somewhat blackish and has a slight discoloration on the side, kind of like when you bend plastic.

GPU came also came with a 3x PCIex8 - 12VHPWR adapter, but I'd have to redo much of the cable management because I only have two PCIex8 cables left and would have to connect a third one to the PSU (current one has the 12VHPWR cable and 2x PCIex8 going to the GPU together).

Edit: Ended up plugging in the other one after all, turned out to be simpler than expected. Don't really want to wonder if things actually are working or if it's just a matter of time, but from what I'm reading on these cables and adapters, these things are pretty prone to issues in general.

So does anyone remember the whole thing with the 4090 melting connectors? It's back with the 5090 and now even worse due to the card having a higher power draw.

Looking to start digging into creating a home network. Not wanting to go crazy, but a more controlled and coordinated environment than just a modem to router setup would be nice. Is there a few good reference points for starting out as to equipment needs, some short term future proofing buys, or anything else like that?

In terms of scope, id like to set up a dedicated home office network, home theater/gaming lane, guest wifi, and a secured wifi for familiar devices.

I don't have a full answer to link you to because I just started looking into this myself, but people I trust have told me Ubiquiti is the go-to and start with the Dream Machine Pro:

Yeah, basically everything I'm hearing about this 50xx series is that whatever tech improvements they've brought are not worth the risk and other hassles. Nvidia desperately needs some competition to bring them back to reality in both hardware quality and pricing.
