Nvidia put out a driver update that has apparently fixed the crashing issue 3080s were having.

NVIDIA posted a driver this morning that improves stability. Regarding partner board designs, our partners regularly customize their designs and we work closely with them in the process. The appropriate number of POSCAP vs. MLCC groupings can vary depending on the design and is not necessarily indicative of quality.

Beggars can't be choosers, but if you can get your hands on gpus with Samsung memory absolutely go for it (micron, nynix and elpidia fucking suck). Idk mang, Samsung has a coca cola-like secret recipe for their ram and it's absolutely fucking superb (~4-6% ^in performance, lower temps/power, etc.). The best of the best.

    *Analysis is based on 10x 20x series~

30** series is GDDR6X which is Micron only at the moment. This could change on the lower numbered cards.

Right away Der8auer wasn't convinced it was poscap v mlcc. He was replacing some on his to test. I haven't seen his conclusion.

This SP-CAP vs MLCC shit is so stupid. There is zero evidence that they were a problem as the cards that have multiple MLCC's and even the TUF cards that had full MLCC's were all crashing in the same way. Basically if the card was boosting above 2000mhz at it's default voltage it would crash. The new driver adjusted the default settings for the boost clock and voltage to make it more stable and the crashes seem to have disappeared at stock.

Most sites are blaming this nonsense on JayTwoCentz and saying "trust the engineers over youtubers". False alarms.

It still feels like something Nvidia should have tested before pushing out the cards.

But yes it looks like it was really just a driver fix to curtail overly aggressive boost frequencies.

This title is misleading. Asus changed their cards for the better before shipping when they discovered the issue. They are the only company that is using 6 mlcc.

His conclusion was that replacing the caps only gets 10-30mhz of stable OC headroom. Issue is not the capacitors, it is the upper limit of what the architecture can achieve. Cards have been shipping right on the line of stability in a lot of cases not because of the way they're built but because they're already pushing the chips to their limit.

You can try but dont expect to get very far over 2GHz

In other news nVidia still hasn't shipped my 3090

edit: nvm false alarm it just got picked up

I saw a bit right after release of the 3080 that these cards are already massively pushed to limits. Like how laptop cards in the recent generations can get to like 90% of the performance of their desktop counterpart at 1/2 the TDP because of diminishing returns.

I can't remember exactly where I saw it but shaving 50 watts off the power limit of the 3080 resulted in only a 4% drop in performance because of how far Nvidia is pushing these at base values

Thats pretty great though. It already performs so well that I might just do that to cut down on heat

    Yeah here - https://www.computerbase.de/2020-09/...x-3080-test/6/

Its in german but the graphs make it clear what's going on

When they first revealed specs on the cards and I saw the massive wattages of the 3080/3090 I was really wondering if this shit was actually mad inefficient and that the eventual laptop versions (or consumer range 3060 stuff) would be hot fucking garbage, but clearly Nvidia's quest to try to showcase a massive generational leap had them push these fuckers into the stratosphere. If they kept stuff at the same relative power draws as the 2000 range it would have only been like a 20-25% boost, which while not great is probably what most people expected prior to the official reveal.

This makes me happy. I know some people love playing the OC game, but I always found it boring.

3080 TUF went back in stock at newegg around 4:30 yesterday. I saw the email at 4:33, and they were gone.

The physical embodiment of "more money than sense".

Waiting for the 80+platinum psu to arrive this afternoon before I slap it in.
