i am glad the show wasnt gun porn, was actually a fairly thoughtful take on the cost of war and vets returning to civvy life. could have done without most of the DHS stuff, cut a few episodes and been even better with less fat around the edges

Just finished and what a fucking ride. Easily my favorite Marvel show I've watched on Netflix. Only thing is I feel out of the loop on a lot of Punisher stuff because I do not read comics and never have. So I'm unsure if this was how Punisher as a comic was? Was this (and most of these Marvel shows) their stand alone bit? Would someone be super cool and do a spoiler of a synopsis of Punisher?

Punisher as a character has been around for 50 years so... there's alot to work with. This story was pulled from a bunch of different material, but specifically with Micro they changed up the character quite a bit.

If you ever want to read some, find anything done by Garth Ennis. Alot of that stuff has been used for TV/movie versions of Frank (the Thomas Jane movie was based off a story entitled "Welcome Back Frank", and the scene in DD Season 2 on the roof is taken almost exactly from a storyline), and it's absolutely the best version of the character.

Generally speaking tho, Punisher is light on emotional and touchy feely family stuff. Frank playing nice with Micro's family or reminiscing about his wife and kids is not something we see with the character. At this point he's very much a stone cold killing machine. The better Punisher stories are generally heavy in dark humor, mostly derived around the ways in Frank finds to murder people.

Oh, forgot to mention I haven't watched DD but after watching The Defenders I'll watch that and JJ. We watched Iron Fist and honestly I didn't give a shit about it and find the guy playing the character annoying.

He started out as a villain in Amazing Spider-Man # ... I want to say 124? 1974 was his first appearance. Starting in the mid-80s he started getting his own series and for a lot of the late-80s and early-90s was easily the most oversaturated character in the market.

The MAX Series by Garth Ennis is probably the definitive Punisher and the closest to the TV series, but the non-MAX work by Ennis, specifically Welcome Back, Frank, also heavily factors into most modern takes on the character. That and the Punisher: Born, detailing his final tour in Vietnam, are most informative. A good deal of the MAX line has been taken out of canon, but not all of it. Rick Remender and Greg Rucka have also had recent runs on Punisher that were simply amazing.

Microchip also heavily factored into early-to-mid Punisher work. They've had a long and storied partnership. Punisher usually doesn't interact with villains (though there have been stories focused specifically around the Punisher existing in this world of superheroes and villains rather than his usual killing mobsters schtick). As you might imagine, very, very few of the Punisher's villains stick around for multiple stories.

Honestly I would've been happy with just one season. Obviously they left threads for a sequel but that was a hell of a Punisher story and the ending was perfect.

Probably, that would be a shame though. John Bernthal was such a good casting for that role, he just has the right amount of unhinged crazy in his eyes.

Two week notice before airing. :/ I get that they're getting outta the Marvel TV game, but I wish there'd be a tad bit more of a marketing push so the shows put up good numbers. Wherever the street level shows end up, I want there to be a reason to continue them.

Nonetheless, pretty hyped. DD S2 and Punisher S1 really was a great showing for the character IMO. I'm glad they're finishing off the Jigsaw story before getting cut, but the character seemed a little under developed. As silly as it sounds, he looks too beautiful after the number Frank did on him. I don't recall ever seeing that mask in play in the comics, though I didn't catch ever Punisher issue either.

Most of the Netflix casting was on point. Netflix is being stupid in this case, imo.

on board, thought the first season was easily the best of Marvel's Netflix stuff.

So I haven't watched any of the Netflix series or agents of shield. Is there a certain series I should watch be for another, or do none of them tie in to each other?

Tie ins are kind of light besides Daredevil S2 + Punisher S1, Jessica Jones S1 + Luke Cage (minor), and Iron Fist S1/Daredevil S2 + Defenders. If you're planning on joining in for the Punisher, I'd recommend Daredevil S2 and Punisher S1 at a minimum. Beyond the Netflix series, they may as well not even be in the same sentence as the MCU. Shield and the movies have no meaningful tie ins, just easter eggs or nods at best.
