So is there a % the vote needs to win, or is it anything over 50% of the total vote? Is it based by a certain # of areas? I'm unsure how this works in the UK.

Yep. It's real close too. I'd bet the cities largely push to Remain and that will get it over the top. I'd be amazed if they actually leave.
They did a YouGov poll which forecast 52%-48% in favour of remaining. I hope that's true or with a bigger margin...
