We're voting on a constitutional convention here in NY next week. The 7th iirc.

Every ad and flyer says to vote no. But it seems like it's out of fear and not because of any proposed changes.

Can anyone help me understand why it's so scary of an idea?

Because once the convention has been agreed to, the Kochs and the Mercers are going to pump money into electing delegates who will advance their nation-wide agenda

As a fellow NYS resident, it's scary because our state government is one of the most corrupt institutions on the planet(I wish I was being hyperbolic here...). The chances that ANY outcome of an alteration to the state constitution benefits us the citizens and not the entrenched interests approach 0%.

Therefore, voting to GIVE the entrenched corrupted interests power to alter the most powerful document in the state...seems insane.

    Thanks for the explanation guys.

I did some additional reading and it seems like anything a committee proposes needs to be then voted on by the public. So even if they try to fuck the people, it comes back to us to vote again.

The problem then becomes getting people to the poles.

Still, good luck out spending interests groups in a state level convention regardless. This is the holy grail of what they would want to achieve with their political spending. You know they're going to spend all the money changing everything they want.

VA goes blue for top leadership and is unexpectedly likely to also go blue in the state house.

Maine looks like it is going to expand Medicare via ballot initiative.

    NJ governor is a Dem.

Charlotte's mayoral race was won by Vi Lyles (D) by a wide margin, after having defeated the incumbent democrat in the primaries, and having been outspent exponentially by the republican candidate.

Pretty happy with this. It was projected to be an even match, but Charlotte is becoming more and more of a liberal bastion, having been the city that passed the equal rights ordinance that led to state republicans responding with HB2 (the bathroom bill).

NY proved that they were temporarily sane. 80%~ against allowing a state constitutional convention.

Annoyed that it was so close. I think a lot of people misunderstood its usage.

I had to Google prop 3 in nyc from the booth for clarification myself. The small blurb on the ballot didn't do it for me.

Washington State now has an entirely Dem government, completing the blue stranglehold on the west coast.

Yeah, there was a good write up in the Times about it. I think a lot of people thought it was a privatization effort due to the wording.

That was my initial assumption too before looking it up, so can't blame em.
