So a Democrat won an Arkansas state seat that Democrats have held since Reconstruction and the Supreme Court disqualified him because he has almost 3-decade old misdemeanor convictions (for selling mortgaged crops?) and their Constitution bars anyone with any fraud convictions from ever holding public office.
Despite my instincts that the law itself is probably rooted in preventing black candidates from holding public office after the Civil War (convict every random black person you can of a misdemeanor theft, take away their right to hold public office for life) it was applied correctly in this case but like... they decided then that the will of the voters (he won with 52% of the vote) was invalid and gave the seat to the Republican, declaring he effectively ran unopposed. Why not hold a special election? Or let Democrats choose a new candidate?
