    Local Elections

I thought perhaps we could benefit from a thread to discuss our local elections. Obviously, being such a diverse group, we're going to have a lot of localities, but I think it could be interesting to talk about. Maybe the more active political types can critique the people running for those who are less active, help each other form opinions of our candidates, etc.

So, to kick things off, my own local election. I got a pamphlet from one Elise Diesslin, and she followed up with a call, which I thought was nice. I'm actually older than she is, which is interesting. On the pamphlet she lists her key issues as "Education, Healthcare, and Infrastructure," and she's DFL, which tells me her platform probably aligns pretty well with my own interests, so I'm considering voting for her. I'd like a bit more information about her before I decide, but unless there's a better alternative (i don't know) I may end up voting against her opponents anyway. The incumbent is a Republican, older, and seems to espouse many policies I actively disagree with. So yeah.

So. Tell me what you think, or share your thoughts about your own local elections.

As always, keep it civil. This thread is intended for people to mull over their options on local elections, perhaps hear about candidates they might not have, get outside views on the issues facing their area, compare with others in the same region, etc. You may debate policy, but keep it at the local level.

Sorry, Kansas is home to Brownback and armchair republicans. No chance of local elections meaning much here.

Most of our local stuff was taken care of in the primary election. California has a bunch of state stuff coming up though, including the legalization of weed.

MA voters are angling at full legatization of marijuana. The state government is starting to accept this, and are doing the normal things to slow it down, but it should be there by about 2020.

Los Angeles put on the November ballot to tax marijuana 10% to pay for homeless services and housing.

I'm also waiting for the Propositions to get showcased. Here's a few that have qualified so far:
    +Legalization of marijuana and hemp
+State wide regulation of the porn industry to use condoms in scenes
    +Abolish the death penalty
+Extension of the state tax on the rich to pay for schools
+A gun and ammunition control bill.

great thread. All politics is local! I encourage everyone to get involved locally so that you can experience maximum possible heartbreak when a candidate you've supported since the beginning sells out.

Doesn't LA/California try this every year (or almost)?

Not exactly, it happens each time a performer tests positive for something.
Ignoring the fact that the performers that catch something don't usually get it from US/Cali porn shoots, but from shoots outside the US industry while they're in another country, and then try to hide it.

VA doesn't seem to have anything substantial going on this election cycle. Not that I can tell at least.

Illinois is going to be tempting to just go down the ballot and vote for everybody who isn't the incumbent.

So one that is on the state election is that the stealing of any firearm is a felony. It was actually in a bill the state senate passed that Brown vetoed saying the people should vote. How that should even be a question if it's a felony or not boggles my mind.

Since this thread hasn't had any activity in a couple days, hopefully no one will mind if I hijack it a bit.

I know I'm not the only Mass resident on here. Where's everyone else coming down on Question 2? I'm not really sure which way to go, personally. I know that in a lot of other states the charter school system is rife with abuse, but it's been somewhat difficult for me to find reliable info about their operations here in MA. On a conceptual level, I don't think charter schools are a real solution to the problems of public schools, but real reform isn't on the ballot so maybe a band-aid is the right way to go.

Gonna sticky this. If you guys want to make threads for specific regions, such as the california thread, or specific issues, that's fine. if you don't wanna create a new thread, this is the thread for local stuff.

I mean, it got posted in the Silly Shit thread, but it's looking like local baseball hero and failed video game studio exec, Curt Shilling is seeking to mount a campaign to challenge sitting Senator Liz Warren.

Gonna quote my original post in this thread cause I think it got lost in the thread getting stickied.

I'm not sure why my comment got deleted but it seems there's nothing of interest going on in our state. We don't have anything really going on other than Gov race and all that.

Washington State has some interesting ones

    • Initiative 1433
      • Increase minimum wage (current is $9.47)
        • $11.00 in 2017
        • $11.50 in 2018
        • $12.00 in 2019
        • $13.50 in 2020

      • Require employers to provide paid sick leave (1 hour for every 40 hours of work minimum)

    • Initiative 1464 - Concerns campaign finance laws and lobbyists (Haven't read through it yet, supposed to restrict how much influence lobbyists have)
      • Create a campaign-finance system
      • Allow residents to direct state funds to candidates
      • Repeal the non-resident sales-tax exemption
      • Restrict lobbying employment by certain former public employees

    • Initiative 1491
      • Would allow police, family, or household members to obtain court orders temporarily preventing firearms access by persons exhibiting mental illness, violent or other behavior indicating they may harm themselves or others.

    • Initiative 735 - Concerns a proposed amendment to the federal constitution
      • This measure would urge the Washington state congressional delegation to propose a federal constitutional amendment that constitutional rights belong only to individuals, not corporations, and constitutionally-protected free speech excludes the spending of money.
