Simplest way to stream video from PC to TV (TLDR: get a Chromecast or GTFO)

Whats the simplest way to stream videos from my computer to my tv? ATM I have a 50 foot hdmi cable but its super annoying hooking it up, having it dragged across the floor, and then having to try and swap audio from the pc to tv. Thought about chrome cast but apparently there's no simple way to do it with that. Any solutions I'm overlooking?

Do you have a FireTV or a PS4? I use Plex for my PC -> TV streaming and I have no issues

If you have a smartphone and your stuff is in a shared folder on your network, you can use something like localcast (on android at least) to start a video stream to a chromecast or almost any DLNA capable devices, though chromecasts have limited video format support. There's also things like wireless display (widi) from intel that requires a dongle and I think windows 10 has built in support for wireless screensharing to certain kinds of devices as well (I don't have my chromecast or firestick to mess with things atm).

Just be aware that your router will need to have a solid connection all around to stream high res stuff.

If you have a smart TV, PLEX works great
if you have a ps4 or ps3 connected to the network, you can set a folder to become shared over the network and accessed by your ps3/4/fire/chromecast for streaming
plex also works with ps3 and 4~

I use Videostream to stream totally legit backups of movies / shows on my Chromecasts.

Also works nicely with subs, mkvs videos and other weird things.

So this basically lets you open the video in chrome and then broadcast to chrome cast? Pretty much what i'm looking for. I do have a ps4 so if this doesn't work i'll try to look up a guide and use PLEX. Just trying to make it as simple to do as possible so my friend can do it when i'm not around. Thanks guys!

I use chromecast to broadcast a monitor on my computer. Open my VERY LEGAL COPY of a movie in VLC, done.

Roku + Plex, Boxee if you can find one, even western digital has boxes.

I did the boxee thing. I have two, they were $20 each, which is a steal. It works pretty well most of hte time with plex, but not as great if you want embedded subtitles. i have certain anime's that have embedded subs and dual languge, and they always come across in english and no subs, or if i strip the english, in japanese iwth no subs. it's kind of annoying, and why I ultimately use a windows box so i can just play everything natively.

I use it with Emby, and view everything in the browser. Playback is awesome and allows me to choose subs, languages, etc.

I don't know your setup, but I had a similar situation and I ended up tucking an hdmi cable under the trim along the wall from my pc to my tv. Can't see it and I like being able to download, or stream, or just watch YouTube or porn without worrying about any connectivity issues or having to buy any kind of stick or anything.

It was a random firmware updated to the Experimental window cast thingy. Hasn't worked at all since.

The workaround is something with porting your router with no other devices then attaching other devices. Or something along those lines.
