    FFXI Re-install Issues

I recently started experiencing issues with FFXI booting up and couldn't troubleshoot it so I decided to try and re-install. After uninstalling, I started experiencing issues upon installing the files again. The install files open and it goes through the motions like its installing but no files are added.

I know my PC can run the game as it ran it for months, I just think I missed something during the uninstall and reinstall sequence and I have no idea how to troubleshoot this issue, especially with how bonkers all Windows stuff is now on W10.

Some instructions here. Make sure ff11 and POL are both completely uninstalled before installing from these downloads. Run as admin and it should work, provided the files are completely downloaded. You don't need any other downloads from this as it is completely self-contained.

Checksums for the files should be:

I downloaded these sometime back but they should still be the exact same files from playonline.

Im using the latest files from PlayOnline so I'm good there. I am the only account on this computer so everything is being run with administrator rights.

I'm not the best computer person, so I have no idea what Hashtab or Checkfiles are and/or how to use those. I don't know how to check if DirectPlay is turned on.

For purposes of ensuring the game is correctly fully uninstalled, I've ensured its uninstalled on my Control Panel. If its still possible to be installed but not be on the Control Panel install/uninstall programs list I don't know how to detect or remediate that.

Windows has not run things as admin by default since 7, so you would likely want to right click on the install file and select "run as administrator" (windows doesn't care if you are marked as "admin," you will still need to do this occasionally).

You install hashtab and then you right click on the file, properties, and select the new tab labeled "File Hashes" and match one of those checksums (like the crc32). They should match with the files of the same names, if not then you will not be able to install since it means the file is missing data.

Older discussion on direct play: http://www.overclock.net/t/1568181/h...-on-windows-10
    Summary:
    Spoiler: show

    1. Right click Start
    2. Click Programs and Features
    3. Click Turn Windows features on or off
    4. Make sure there is a check in Legacy Components
    5. Click the + to expand
    6. Check the box for DirectPlay

Also, turn off your antivirus program if you have one.

Windows 8/8.1/10 sometimes causes problems with FFXI after random updates.

You say it's not booting up, but exactly what happens?

FFXI was not booting up in the sense that when it went to transition from PlayOnline to FFXI and the blue Accept/Decline screen, it would error out and not launch the game and that blue screen. The game is now uninstalled and I'm having issues reinstalling it. I've attempted Orintha's latest instructions as best I can, including disabling anti virus and right-clicking and Running the .exe install file from FFXI's website using Run as Administrator. The same problem sequence still occurs where the file goes completely through the apparent install sequence, first with the main game / ROZ, then COP, TOAU, etc, one by one, however no files are added to my Program Files, no icons or applications appear on the desktop or start menu, and my drive size stays the same.

In regards to DirectPlay, following those directions, I run into a missing menu at step 4:

The instructions on playonline website say not to install xpacs, look at this picture: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/dow..._installer.png

This is all that is apparently needed now, just playonline viewer and ffxi base, nothing else. Also, take note of where you are installing the files and see if you can visit that folder. If anything, specify a new folder, like c:\FFXI , so you know if has to go somewhere.

add: also, if it did install, you should be able to just hit the windows key and type in "final" (without the quotation marks) to bring up shortcuts to ffxi (and anything else with 'final' in the name). If it's not installed, then this won't bring it up.

Was it actually a blue screen? If so, what was the code?

Blue Screen as in the first screen for the FFXI game log in where you are asked to Accept/Decline. NOT a Windows OS/Harddrive blue screen.

Also tried only POL/FFXI install just now and no luck, verified using both manual hunt through Program Files and the Windows search described. Does not actually ask where I want to install it so I'm not sure where its fake installing it, to be honest.

Are you sure your antivirus is completely off or exited? It may be killing it before it gets a chance to do much.

There's a good chance it's the DirectPlay stuff tripping you up. Try this to resolve the blank features list:
