Voidwatch cells: What do they do? Do they do things? Lets find out.

(In which I analyze FFXIDB data from 2012)

So, the guildwork app feeds ffxidb various data, which includes voidwatch kill info and did include red/blue light levels. However, the message ID for light level is zone-specific and at some point it wasn't updated any longer, potentially resulting in 0-lights being reported when there actually were lights. There's probably something wrong with the 1-49 group.

Blue and Red lights are typically correlated, but fortunately the numbers came out pretty clearly.

    HMP Pouches:
    Spoiler: show
    Red
    1-49 : 15/340 (4.4%)
    50-99 : 0/0 (0%)
    100-149 : 0/3 (0%)
    150-199 : 1/22 (4.5%)
    200-249 : 2/44 (4.5%)
    250-299 : 7/125 (5.6%)

    350-449 : 1448/25591 (5.6%)
    450-550 : 12629/208787 (6%)
    Chi squared (p=0.024, still significant)

    Blue
    1-49 : 15/340 (4.4%)
    50-99 : 0/0 (0%)
    100-149 : 0/21 (0%)

    550 : 1721/29394 (5.8%)

    1-449 : 10914/182773 (5.9%)
    450-550 : 3108/52466 (5.9%)
    Chi squared (p=0.685, not significant)

    350-449 : 9746/160828 (6%)
    450-550 : 3108/52466 (5.9%)
    Chi squared (p=0.560, not significant)

Red cells significantly increase pouch drop rate, but not super dramatically (drop rate +10% if you use cells?)

    Number of drops:
    Spoiler: show
    Red
    1-49 : 1315/340 Avg. 3.86
    50-99 : 0/0 Avg. 0
    100-149 : 4/3 Avg. 1.33
    150-199 : 51/22 Avg. 2.31
    200-249 : 135/44 Avg. 3.06
    250-299 : 388/125 Avg. 3.1
    300-349 : 1061/327 Avg. 3.24
    350-399 : 20056/5296 Avg. 3.78
    400-449 : 81825/20295 Avg. 4.03
    450-499 : 8458/2223 Avg. 3.8
    500-549 : 203610/48305 Avg. 4.21
    550 : 676524/158259 Avg. 4.27

There appears to be a correlation between Red light and number of drops. R^2 =0.856

    Blue
    1-49 : 1315/340 Avg. 3.86
    50-99 : 0/0 Avg. 0
    100-149 : 28/21 Avg. 1.33
    150-199 : 832/454 Avg. 1.83
    200-249 : 7089/3055 Avg. 2.32
    250-299 : 20795/7484 Avg. 2.77
    300-349 : 34591/10591 Avg. 3.26
    350-399 : 171314/45001 Avg. 3.8
    400-449 : 477277/115827 Avg. 4.12
    450-499 : 22890/4835 Avg. 4.73
    500-549 : 95460/18237 Avg. 5.23
    550 : 161836/29394 Avg. 5.5

There is a correlation between Blue light and number of drops. R^2 = 0.998

so basically, use blue cells instead of red which is the opposite of what i've been doing this whole month

5.6% vs.6.1% is not exactly breaking any records, but it would be an extra hundred plates if you farmed 1500 or something. Probably worth the cells.

Thanks for crunching the data anyway. I always suspected more loot slots = more chances at one of those slots being a pouch but there was never any way to know for sure. In the future will be all blue all the time.

Isn't the descriptor for red light and blue light literally quality/quantity? Are they really backwards?

My fault, I got it wrong.

I'm pretty sure that the data was being recorded correctly. It's rather hard to end up with R^2=0.998 with a bunch of bad data. It seems like the data isn't messed up, so the only other option would be that it's flipped. I investigated that possibility before making the post, because this finding means I've wasted a lot of cells in my day.

Blue light numbers are being pulled from the first field in the message packet, while Red light numbers are being pulled from the third. Based on the dialogue .dats, it looks like the structure for params is
    <int 1><int 2><int 3><int 4>
int 1 = blue light base
int 2 = blue light bonus
int 3 = red light base
int 4 = red light bonus

So it's doing it right, as far as I can tell. There is one step of the path from your games to FFXIDB that I don't have access to, but it would literally have to be blue=red, red=blue in that step. It looks like our understanding of cells is just exactly inverted. Cobalt is quality (p=0.024) and Rubicund is quantity (R^2 = 0.998).

In-game description of the lights are:
"For instance, improving blue spectral alignment is known to produce greater quantities of spoils."
"In contrast, manipulating red spectral alignment reportedly enhances the quality of individual items--potions becoming hi-potions, and so forth."
"Yellow and green, on the other hand, influence experience gain and cruor yield respectively."

I confirmed those descriptions are consistent in the japanese version. If someone feels like checking the truth of this claim, Rubicund Cell should add 1.5 drops on average and should be pretty obvious. If someone (like Prothescar) was using only Rubicund and hitting Take All, log scanning could pretty quickly verify these results.

Technically if you have the counts for blue cells (number of occurrences of x drops versus alignment) you could get a chi-square statistic for that contingency table. Using R^2 on the means omits the sample size for each category, though obviously this is a very large sample situation.

Rubi cells are far more popular than cobalt, but you have 5x as much data for 550 blue than 550 red? Am I looking at this wrong?

OK, nevermind. Arcon went into the part of the source that I don't have access to and it flips red/blue. I'm going to update the OP to that effect.

What does that mean? That red actually affects hmp for real and your original post was wrong because ffxidb data was flipped between blue and red?

    I'm confused D:

I wish I would have re-read this before I loaded up on nothing but blue cells today. Whoops!
