    DNC Restructuring

Following the events of 11/8 the DNC is now undergoing some restructuring after quite literally exploding.

Congressman Keith Ellison has thrown in his name for DNC Chairman (With endorsements from Warren and Bernie) as well as Ex Governor Howard Dean.

If Democratic voters are not sufficiently shocked out of their apathy by Trump's victory it's going to be awful.

Their only hope is that he becomes the enemy they need to galvanize their base.

Naw, there's almost no hope for a majority in the house (gerrymandering needs to be fixed at the state level) or senate (25 inde-dems and 7 repubs, 6 of which are in dark red states) in 2018. 2020 has a chance in the senate and maybe in the house if we fix gerrymandering.

Well, given we have like what, 30-something republican governors, republican statehouses all over the place, republican president/congress/scotus, I think the gerrymandered states are here for a while. But hey, it was just 8 years ago we had democratic pres with democratic congress and supermajority.

Virginia just got redistricted by the supreme court because the good old boys got caught gerrymandering based on race and the blues gained a house seat. VIRGINIA AND MINNESOTA GOING TO SAVE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

Howard Dean is a large part of the problem, lol. Talk about alienating potential Hillary voters.

What they need to do is restructure their platform and not shut out the other half of their base. They lost because they didn't listen and were too proud and smug to heed the warnings.

2018 is important on the state level. Taking back those state legislatures puts democrats in charge of redistricting in 2020.

Didn't they literally have an audio tape or email explicitly stating that they were redistricting to suppress democratic voting power.

The plan isn't that hard on a local level. If the democrats can't win in a midterm with republicans controlling literally everything and being held accountable for everything, they deserve to fall into obscurity. Yes the 2018 senate map is hard, but there's so much more to work with.

Just wrapped up a case with North Carolina a couple weeks ago. They really, really wanted to redistrict 2 Congressional districts based on race, and DoJ is being pretty insistent that they cannot.

Republicans won 55% of house seats with 49% of the national vote. Hard to win when you're playing with a built-in handicap.

Yes, it will take a +8 democrat swing or whatever the generic ballot polls say is necessary to win the house. This kind of swing should happen in a midterm.

And, as I mentioned, the local elections is where it needs to really work. Finding really good, solid, working class leftists at the state level is where it needs to happen. Whoever wins in 2018 will control the redistricting process in a lot of these places and cleanse out the hyper republican gerrymandering.

It also requires democrats to vote in 2017. I hope 2016 is the painful lesson that gets democrats voting every year.

Problem is that people rely on "nobody would ever do that" and get complacent.

I heard today that republicans are one state house majority away from being able to amend the constitution.

I'm trying to figure out how actually true that is. If it is, oof.

Yeah but that process is long and hard. You'd have to get every red state to sign off on the constitutional amendment.

It'd be much easier to pass legislation in congress with a simple majority. Right now the DNC needs to rebuild away from the cool-kids club that was set up in 2016. Get the exciting populist movement that Bernie (And to an extension Trump) hit upon. And have a ground game that gets people registered to vote. Out to vote. And excited to vote. The only issue is the next chance to really try to make gains won't be until 2020. 2018 will essentially be trying to prevent the leaking ship to prevent republicans from gaining a filibuster proof super majority in the senate.
