Altered Carbon - TV Series - Cyberpunk - Adapted from Richard Morgan

    IMDB LINK

Altered Carbon is a 2002 hardboiled cyberpunk science fiction novel by Richard K. Morgan. Set some five hundred years in the future in a universe in which the United Nations Protectorate oversees a number of extrasolar planets settled by human beings, it features Takeshi Kovacs as a former U.N. elite soldier and a native of Harlan's World, a planet settled by a Japanese keiretsu with Eastern European labour.[1]

A ten-episode TV adaptation by Netflix was announced in 2016.
This isn't the newest of news but I couldn't find a thread about it. Happily, Netflix is in charge so the production value should be solid.

I want this to be good but tbh this trailer is looking like a generic action movie with a splash of cyberpunk paint on it.

Watched 3 episodes so far. Story is decent. Nothing amazing. However, the aesthetic of the show is absolutely great. And the world building. That stuff alone has kept my interest. Looking forward to watching the rest.

Also watched the first three so far. It's everything I wanted out of a cyberpunk series. The world is alive... and really fucked up.

Spoilers below, watched the whole thing w/ the GF last night and today.

    Spoiler: show
I enjoyed it. I had a few issues with some very minor things but overall this is a hell of a fucking series with some terrific actors.

I did not like Lizzie's character doing the whole "I see everything, all the branches of the tree" shit, mostly because I hate oracles and seers of any kind in shows.

    Otherwise, I love it.

    I loved it but

book spoilers for all 3 books
    Spoiler: show
I don't understand why they changed the backstory of the envoy's so much, and combined Vidaura, Quellcrist, and Takeshi's Girl into one character. I have no idea how they are gonna do seasons 2 and 3 now. If anything it would have let the flashback plot breathe a little bit more cause there wouldn't be as much stuff to cover if they left it the same or at least similar to the books. Making kawahara his sister was fine though, she was pretty undeveloped in the book compared to the show.

    I agree.

    Spoilers book and show
    Spoiler: show
They really shot their wad combining stuff to create a solo love interest storyline. I'm not too worried because Morgan is consulting on the whole thing but who knows.

    is book worth a read?

thoughts for those who have finished the show.
    Spoiler: show
In my opinion the first half of the season was a lot stronger than second half. I enjoyed discovering the world with Tak more than any of the actual plot resolution. Was so obvious sister was gonna be the villain the second she was introduced. I was disappointed that a show which introduced so many great characters and so much engrossing mystery & wonder could be so hamfisted and obvious with lil sis. Anyway, I hope he finds Angelica Schuyler in S2 and also that they find a way to bring Poe back

    Overall I agree,
    Spoiler: show
As soon as he said she had been at Stronghold it was obvious there was only one way she got out. Still, I wouldn't say that the second half of the series was weak, per se, just weaker than the beginning. We still got some great sick dystopia with the snuff hookers on the airship and the great scene of Ortega fighting a million naked clones.

Also, I agree with Zet's criticism about Lizzie. The character was really not interesting and saying "now i'm psychic for some reason" didn't help.

Edit: Also to long-time anime fans
    Spoiler: show
Anyone else have uncomfortable flashbacks when someone walked into a room full of clones of a girl called Rei?

I also have a few questions that maybe I missed the answers to or just went unresolved. Maybe book readers can shed some light.

    Spoiler: show
    From episode 1:
Who was the girl Tak was with when he got caught?
Were those stacks she was cleaning of any importance?

    In general:
Did we ever find out what became of Jaeger? I only remember him in the flashbacks

Also something I randomly noticed but could be dead wrong about:
The Protectorate and CTAC didn't actually seem like they were bad. The only operations we saw them go on were to take down the Yakuza and capture Tak when he was a full blown merc. So tak real-deathed a bunch of them when he ran into his sister which is kind of fucked up. Were the envoys actually terrorists? WAS I CHEERING FOR THE BAD GUYS?

    Spoiler: show
I mean, they did lie to Tak about his sister and leave her in the kind of orphanage that had no problem selling her to the Yakuza, also had no problem using bio-weapons on a camp that contained children or executing a defenseless civilian. Pretty safe bet they were bad.

    I also havee a question
    Spoiler: show
Are we meant to believe Tak RD'd Rei? He seemed really against it, but then after the shot happened off camera, he was grieving like she was really gone.

Lotta personal opinion on that second bit.

    First bit:

    Spoiler: show
Jaegar, I assume shows back up in S2.

The girl is someone different in the book, they've combined a bunch of characters. So I have no idea.
