If you believe the leaks, you should def pick up the vanilla version for cheap. If not, you will have to pay extra, on top of AE, for some of the new characters.

Trying to weigh the price difference between picking it up now cheap and adding the new charas/stages/costumes through money or grinding, or picking up AE and getting them all packed in.

Even if you got vanilla completely free, I doubt you would be able to unlock all the S1/S2 characters by the time AE came out without spending additional money.

Here's how I would probably approach the decision from your standpoint: do you have any interest in the extra stages or bonus costumes? If not, then you can buy vanilla cheap (wait for a Steam sale or something) and barebones grind all the DLC characters. However, if you will want some stages, costumes, colors, etc., then you're better off waiting for AE. With 28 characters unlocked from the gate, it'll be easy to do basic stuff like character story/demonstration and earn enough FM for S3 characters and additional swag.
